on putting me engine back in found could not get the oil going, so put a battery drill with a home made attachment on and took the distributer out, and attached the drill to the oil pump and primed, it worked a treat.
You chaps may have tried this but just thought I would pass it on.

Yep, I have such a tool... length of M12 studding with a slot cut in the end! Weld a nut on so that it's flush with the end of the thread and you have a captive slot to keep the rod on the pump drive as you spin it. I covered my shaft (ooer) with heatshrink so that any accidents wouldn't score the distributor bore.

But how do I know what way the oil flows, because turning the filter round would alter the in and out direction, would it not.
Please help chaps am wondering have I messed it up.
If I understand your description/question correctly: you cannot alter the in and out directions, as filter opening facing upwards or downwards the whole assembly is just turned 180 degrees. So nothing to worry about, except the filter having a non-return valve to make as much sure that the oil pump keeps primed as long as possible due to it.Please help chaps am wondering have I messed it up.

I refitted my oil filter down side up; will this affect the oil flow in any way?
I inverted my filter a number of years ago and mounted it between the Radiator and the lsh of the engine (there isn't room if you have power steering). I haven't had any problems with oil starvation.Russ
