Searching for V8 Engine Type and Specs
Discussion
Hello TVR Wedge enthousiasts,
I am trying to find out the type and specs of my V8 engine which is installed in my Ginetta G33.
The engine number (as far I can read) is: CR 9 35.1 TVR (P?) 240 G2 47A00990A.
The last number indicates that this engine was used for a Morgan Plus 8, the first number indicates the compression ratio.
I learned from a former Ginetta employee that Ginetta used to source their engines (in 1991) from TVR Power and G2 would probably indicate the second G33 equipped with such an engine. The figure 240 probably hints at the power, being 240 hp. I am not sure whether the 'R' belongs to the engine number as it is hard to read.
The plenum cover of my engine shows: '400 SE'. Maybe this engine came from a TVR 400 SE?
I am interested to know the specs of this engine? I.e. power, torque, bore, stroke, capacity(cc) and type of valves and cam?
Regards,
Miel

400 was supposed to be 275 on paper. But it was magic paper and invisible ink or something. Sure someone can fill in the gaps on the spec though. You might find an engine number starting with NCK? That might indicate when and there may be some info for it. NCK are now TVR Power I believe?
Out of curiosity, were there and Chimera or Griffith 4l SE?

Looks like a 4 litre Hotwire (with rocker covers on tuther way round to usual TVR arrangement).
Standard for the time comp' ratio. Should have a NCK engine number on it, unless someone has just nicked the 400 label...thought they just said '400/450',etc on the label anyway
400SE motor with 'honest' bhp figure ?
The same engine in the V8 S-Series was quoted as 240bhp, as was the engine in the 400 (non-HC) Chims (with cat) but all the different models had different exhaust manifolding and systems, as also has the Ginetta...so some variation likely there.
My 400SE Hotwire produced 230bhp/250lbs torque on the R/R, with a 40 odd thousand mile engine.

In January 2010 I brought my car to a Dyno test (Rolling Road?) and initially the following was measured:
203,6 Hp @ 5132 rpm and 325 Nm @ 2475 rpm.
After installation of new stainless steel exhausts, re-adjustement of Air/Fuel Ratio (which was too lean) removal of lambda sensors (which had no function as there are no cats) and removal of rpm-limit the following results were measured:
236,7 Hp @ 5275 rpm and 365 Nm @ 3887 rpm.
Air/Fuel Ratio was before between 14 and 16 and now around 10.

As other have said power should be around 180 at the wheels in our TVRs with somewhere between 35 and 45 bhp trans losses. The engine will most probably be standard LR except some headwork (stock valves) and a cam (varies but kent H214 is often bandied about).
If your fuel mixture really is 10:1 imho thats far too rich and would be loosing torque, around 12.7 is where you want to be. My engine won't make power at higher revs if the AFR leans out past 13:1 above 5k rpm for instance.
Whats your at the wheels power figure? 238hp is a healthy output.

The power as indicated has been re-calculated at the crank or flywheel. Measurement was taken at the wheels and transmission losses have been taken into account as 0,12 hp/km/h. Thus at a speed of 100 km/h a loss of 12 hp.
I try to attach the power curve to this message; I had to convert pdf file into jpeg in order to stay within the limited upload size of this website. I hope you are still be able to read it.
The Air/Fuel Ratio is indeed too rich; adjustment seems hard to do and may only be adjusted by changing the engine management chip.

Miel
