spot the cheap/nasty one? other, thicker one bears the Lucas name and has apparently cured dreaded random misfiring...although I did replace the dizzy cap too so I might be jumping to conclusions...but has anyone else got exprience of these rather cheap looking (Italian) rotors?

It has indeed been an issue for quite some time.

Check on ebay for old lucas stock - it often sells at more than you expect because it actually works well.

Most reputable sources of TVR parts manage to find good quality parts though.

There was also more than 1 version of cap / rotor arm too .. to confuse things.

Problem with ebay is a lot of the rotors sold as Lucas are in fact pattern part crap in a Lucas box. Apparently the rights to use the box/branding were sold to 4 different manufacturers so it can be a lottery getting a decent part.

Why not put the arm back in to see if it was the arm, or the dizzy cap ;^)

See my other thread, Greenstar TVR and a fab day. As I mention in that my 450 was running like a bag of spanners despite having a rolling road tune up last year. The guys at Greenstar replaced the rotor arm with a genuine Lucas one. The one I had in was a generic Halfords / motor factor one. Apparently they are not as tight a fit inside the distributor as the Lucas and this can move the timing fractionally out and if you think about it, the thinner metal of a the generic version won't transmit a spark as well as the thicker Lucas. It's something I had never thought of before, but now that Greenstar put a Lucas one on and the 450 is running sweetly, I will never use a generic rotor arm again.
