My speedo has packed up. Not sure if it's the cable. I whipped out the cable and felt around for the drive gear in the box which appears to moving about. The question I have though is whether or not it's possible to fit the electronic type as per the Griff/Chimps etc or a sutiable alternative? I've been told that the box may have to come out to change the speedo drive gear that spins the cable. There mus be an easier solution....!!!

Don't worry. You won't have to remove the gearbox to replace the cable. The cable went on my 450 a couple of years ago. The cable attaches into the gearbox on the passenger side and is held in place by a "Y" shaped fork which is in turn held in place by one bolt. The most time consuming aspect of the job was jacking up the car to gain access. So it should not take you too long to do.

I got my replacement cable from Tvrcarparts.com although most people tend to use Speedycables. You may need to post the old speedo cable to them to ensure you get a direct like for like swap.

On my 400 it was found (after fitting new £50 cable rolleyes), that the gearbox cog housing itself was damaged, so fitting a new cog or cable was not going to fix anything.

I hope you have better luck...check first.

Did you manage to fix it after all?

No.
It would have required welding the gearbox or other such expensive mucking about, so I used my satnav.

I had the same problem as Graham.

However, I've added a pushbike speedo (5.99 from halfrauds) to my car (Magnet on one of the rear hub studs, reed switch on the hub carrier, extended the cable down the tunnel and speedo mounted on top of the steering column. I've had it fitted for 4 years / 8000 miles and it's still on it's original battery..

I did use my satnav to check the calibration on it though
