Why have a fuel filter after the pump?
Discussion
Hi
Why did TVR put the fuel filter after the fuel pump? When the rubbish from the tanks can block and damage the pump (After 20 odd years most tanks will have some!)
I drained the wife's 2.8i to day and the rust which was in the outlet of the swirl pot was very worrying. If any of that had got into the pump it would have at least blocked it, and at the worst, I would be looking for a new pump!
Is there any reason why the main filter can't be between the swirl pot and the pump?
Andy

Andy,
The injectors have a much finer tolerance than the pump which is why a fine filter is needed after the pump.
The best solution is to have 2 filters ..... 1 between swirlpot and pump to protect the pump and the usual filter to protect the injectors.
The one between swirlpot and pump cant be too fine though as if it blocks with debris it will starve the pump, run dry and fail soon after.
Probably need a filter around 50 - 70 micron before the pump whereas the one after the pump will be around 5 - 10 micron.
Hope this helps.
Dave.

The Original swirl pots had a filter built into them, but if anyone fits an Ali one they don't so you must fit a pre-filter, I posted link before as to where to buy.
If you don't your pump will not last very long.
Also the filter after the pump is very very fine, and needs the pumps pressure to work.
It's quite amazing how clean the petrol is after the filter, had petrol dis-colour due to rust, but came out clear after the filter.
