Power Steering Up Grade 390 se
Discussion
Hi,My 390se had its power steering removed when i bought it and i am attempting to re fit it.
That said i was given a power steering rack with the car which i was told was the original rack.
I do not have the pump and wondered if it is a Rover SD1 or aRange rover P38.
PLEASE CAN ANY ONE SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS AND I WOULD ALSO APPRECIATE ANY PHOTOGRAPHS OF A PUMP SET UP MOUNTED ON THE CAR AS I HAVE NO REFERENCE.
Best regards Paul

Its an SD1 pump with integral reservoir, I have a few pics but nothing that close up, I did a bit of anorak research into pumps for a power steering conversion on my V8S.
The SD1 style pump I think can be mounted low down like this

or higher up like this

I believe the higher up pump option uses a TVR special bracket which is hard to source, but the lower one is a standard SD1 bracket I think
The problem I found was with the pulleys - there are just millions of them!
I gave up in the end and bought an electric pump of a citroen saxo.
I nicked some of the pics above from various places by the way
There is a very similar looking pump which was fitted to the maestro / montego but I don't know if it is interchangeable - I've seen brand new ones go on ebay for £10!
I really need to get out more but my album of power steering pumps & related pics is here

Hope this helps

Yep, I have a spare one of those, tripped over it when I was buying a lathe and the guy said I could have it! He said it was ex-Montego. The only difference I can see is that the neck is shorter.Chris

My PAS whines like hell. I've considered binning it to lose some weight, complexity and noise!
It works fine, and its got fresh oil and hoses, but the noise makes people think its supercharged!!
Mine original one did that, I think it's just the bearing, stopped when I fitted a new one.It works fine, and its got fresh oil and hoses, but the noise makes people think its supercharged!!
My 390 SE is a bit of a conundrum it was a TVR factory car from 1986 to 2000 when it was fitted with a new 3.9 engine and had the power steering removed i assume with a view to track events and sold to the guy i bought it from, the car only covered 9k miles betwean 2000 and present day with all corresponding MOT certs to confirm.
So i guess its bodily a series 1 the bonnet doesnt have the vents well not at present but ill keep looking for one in white to match the car and it doesnt have the boot spoiler.
I wanted to take it to Wedgefest but rear calipers are bin ding and i need to get them refurbed i dont want to come to grief.
Some pics attached
Let me know what you think
Regards Paul

Hi Grahame,
Yes evidently it was re chasied all looks ok underneath.
If it was refitted internally it would look like a new car the engine and cooling system alllook quite new and im waiting for delivery of new induction kit K&N to tidy up the original foam thing.
Im not totally happy with the brakes and suspension set up so this year thats whats high on the agenda
i was intending taking it to Le-mans as i go with a group of mates but unfortunately we won't be ready in time.
Might have a trip out to Whitton Park in BLACKBURN today Classic Car Day.
Best regards
