Hopefully i may get some help and understanding from this posting

Some weeks ago, uncovering the 400se from a weeks holiday (wanting a quick blast) the windscreen was cracked.
Managed to find one from Pilo-wedgebits/shaun but thought no, not wanting too much hassle I will claim from the insurance...simple.

Rang the number given, had a bit of hassle as they were adamant the windscreen could not be changed at my home must trip to Derby to their works. (one of the reasons given was the funniest I have ever heard)

4 hours I sat there, the result, the screen is in but it's shocking, a mess.

The orignal screen was not perfect but at least it was flat to the frame, currently it sits in at the top and sticks out from the frame still on the side by 6mm near the bottom, both sides. It's uneven across the top and they have made a real mess of the bead between the glass and frame.

Reasons
"It is a TVR"
"The frame is out"
"The glass is flat"
"The bead is glue not silicone that's why we cannot finish it well but we could leave a gap for you too "!
"The frame needs to be altered"
"This type of car needs a trim around the glass"......"but earlier you told me because you had not got any it suits this model not to have any trim" ?
There was a few more too

Now they have said that they will organize a replacement "direct from TVR ", erm.... they went bust ?
"Well it will be a TVR screen, i will take your chassis number to make sure"
BUT I have to go back when they have it in stock, another 4 hours " with no guarantee mate, could be the same as this one fitted"

Anybody had the same crap

There's member on here who IIRC can source and fit the correct windscreens. Can't remember the name, but maybe try a search.

What ignorant fools ! rolleyes

Maybe the frame isn't true, etc etc. In that case they shouldn't have started the job, or at least done something to finish it off correctly.

Take photos with date imprinted, make notes, get it done properly by someone (like the guy in the link ?), and send the original incompetents the bill.

400s don't have a trim do they ? Mine was bonded straight on to the frame.

My present S2 390 does have a narrow rubber strip around it.

Mine Does, maybe it's hiding a poorly fitted screen, I used a similar rubber strip, given to me by the windscreen fitted to hide similar problems on the Stylus.

I had mine done a couple of times on the 350i before it was right - RAC Windscreens. They got it right in the end, though.

Stephen,

I can vouch for Paul (Glassman) as he fitted a new screen in my SEAC last year.

However, he does not really cover out as far as the Midlands but I'm pretty sure he can recommend an independent colleague that does. He chairs a forum for inde screen fitters.

I confirmed with my insurance Co that I could go with an inde and was not tied to Autoglass!

Dealing with Paul I spoke with his colleague at Pilkington's who told me I could order plain or any colour tint + any colour top tint.

Also, that they could even supply a front screen with built-in demisting element!!!

Don't know what you are whingeing about, some people just complain for the fun of it wink

Surely it doesnt need to be sealed properly because it doesnt have to keep water out, thets face it you never have your roof on and should it rain that probably is a greater source of a leak.

Does it keep the flies off your face - yes
Does it stop your wig blowing off - yes
Will it get covered in bird cr#p - yes

laugh

I had my 400SE screen replaced by Autoglass Tipton at my home and got a perfect job.

Granted they got the wrong screen first time, but when they had the right one took them about 2 hours.

Admittedly the bloke on the phone said they were sending their best chap and if he had something special it would be this guy he would ask to do it.

Initially they did ask me to go to the depot but I said no. They have a phobia about the curvy ones, seems they're awkward. Once they saw the Wedge was no problem.

Oh, and no seal, just bonded.

Autoglass stoke was exellent. they too had problems initially with a wrong screen & a damaged screen sent but he fitter had done TVRs before & knew his job well. I had to go to the centre though but he let me stand and watch him do it.

Thanks to everybody for your helpfully words but I ve started down the route with Autoglass(how did you all know)
I had better see it to the end.
I will post some pic's of the sticky out windscreen as soon as my son shows me how to again.
I will be taking on your words though by ringing my insurance comp and letting them know were I'am at and that i will not accept a shoddy job. (not that it will get me very far)

Back to the quote above
I was refusing to go to autoglass yard because, one i've had a screen replaced on my drive before with no problems
and it's a ploy by them to get as may folks to their yard because they can do more, i was told the same crap for my comp audi A4 .
I was discussing my problem with a very helpful young man who asked how did the windscreen become to be cracked
"i dont know" was my answer.
"HHMMMMMMMMM" was his reply.
"What's the matter" I posed.
"Thats your problem there" was his forthright responce.
"Listen friend, the screen was replaced 6 years ago" I said slowly.
"Yes" He said " sometimes it can take that long to show through as a faulty fitting, you had better come to our work shop"

You have to laugh, don't you

P.S. Thanks Wyne for you email, if it all goes wrong they will be the first i will call

i remember certain written warnings in TVR literature, web forums, tvr-club announcements that fitting a windscreen on a Wedge needs to be done by experts who defintately know these cars...otherwise it will end in a mess....

so it sounds like your story.

but never forget: you brought your car to these un-expierienced guys.

Steve - if it doesn't fit that's a safety issue either for you as a driver or (god forbid) if you hit a pedestrian and there's a bit sticking up. Accept no bullsht and insist on a proper job.
