i can only assume this shouldn't really happen...but have now noticed it on both my wedges....a channel 'grooved' into the arches by the tyres - presumably caused by large bumps/tired springs/going too fast?? any advice?

Springs still ok or started sagging due to age? Replace if so.

If springs are ok, use shock absorbers that have an adjustable platform to get a bit more clearance. At least this helped me.

It should not happen but it seems to be a common problem on a lot of cars.

Mine does it very occasionally on the o/s only on heavy dips at speed when loaded or trackdays. Adjustable platforms can help, but I do have 8.5" rear wheels. Just another foible.

Mine did exactly that on my chim with 10" rims fitted on the rear.

If all else is correct, it might be worth going down the route of trimming the inner edge of the arches.

Easy job, I borrowed a fibreglass cutting tool, trimmed a "wedge" slice out of the arch, filled the hollow void left with expanding filler foam, fibreglassed over and touched up with a bit of underseal, job done in an evening!

Of course, run all the checks first, ride height, correct springs, sufficient damping so the rear doesn't compress too quickly.

It may well be worth fitting slightly stiffer springs, say + 20% as the original chim springs are, for example too soft as standard.

I had the same issue, few years ago changed the springs over for new competition type, all fine but when the car was fully loaded the car bottomed out, I purchased new ones (Same height/coils etc as the previous set) so fitted spacers. I kept the old springs and compared then to my latest wedge springs, they were a good 1 1/2" shorter, strange as both sets of springs came from a top notch TVR supplier so maybe the spec changed.
