I hear, or have read somwhere, that Suffolk Police are intituting a county-wide purge on noisy cars following a trial in the Bury St Edmunds area. It seems that this measure is primarily geared at boy-racer types who modify their cars with 'bean-can' exhausts, but I suspect that Wedge and other TVR owners may fall foul of this, especially as the mark they have detemined not to be exceeded is 83 decibels I think. No dount TVR owners can plead the 'low volume manufacturer' argument, but will the rozzers run with this? Similarly 'It was like this when it was new', since they only seem to be after modified cars.

It seems that officers have had special 'training' in the use of the noise meters, but I still wonder at what distance from the car they take the reading.

Lots of Wedges are 90 - 100db and more aren't they?

Is this happening in other areas?

I'll try and find the article to confirm the points.

iirc there is no legal noise level for a road car
to start fining people who have passed an MOT with the same exhaust is surely likely to lead to repercussions

Under the Road Traffic Act or whatever it was and is now replaced by, there is the offence of 'excessive noise from a motor vehicle', but a specific noise level was never stipulated. About 70% of vehicle noise is tyre noise when in motion, but I think Wedges must be the exception to that rule.

I had my attention drawn to the offence when I had to slow down and stop due to an incident some years ago whilst driving my Lancia. It was during the summer and I had the windows and sun roof open as the heater was permanently stuck in the 'on' position. I was playing Vivaldi's Four Seasons at the time, and I was given a verbal ticking off for 'excessive noise etc.' I had it at areasonable level so as to hear the noise over the wind buffeting, but not, I think, at full volume. No doubt the copper was a Val Doonican fan and hated classical music!

I was stopped a few years ago when I owned an old Honda Bros 650 with a race exhaust on it and was told to change it because it was too loud. Is it just aftermarket exhausts that would fail a check?? My 350i has a standard exhaust and I would say its louder than my old Honda. If it sounded different (quieter)then I don't think I would like it as much as I do.

I seem to remember reading someone was refuse entry to a track day because his car exceeded the track noise limit?????

Track Limits are measured at 3/4 max rev's though not max noise.

How close do the circuit noise police hold the noise meter from the exhaust?

Mine comes in at 86db angel, that's only with the track silencers fitted though.

I gave up on track days, ok only did one prior but wanted to do more. The 400 does not come quiet. But it did have a type approved sticker on the wing. And when I had the stainless fitted I went for the quiet one rather than loud as at the time I was traveling to work in it. Work being 150 miles away and an aural gbh that made your head ring at the end of the trip was not good. But I think it is still too loud for the track.

I have three Wedges off the rolling road as well on tape. I need to load them up at some point. Not sure how the sound has been captured by the camera microphone.

Why give up on Trackdays?? They're the best way to enjoy your wedge legally and at the speeds they were designed for ?
My 390 is 105 - 108Db depending on which equipment was used over the past few Trackdays, but simply bolting on one of Tower view racing's inserts instantly dropped me down to 98/99 at Cadwell park last year. It's only a one bolt fixing. (BTW Cadwell park is an absolute MUST! what a track!!

At the time it was my only car. Well, the mrs had hers for work and that was needed and I could not have borrowed it. Having a slight issue as a result of a track day would have caused me grief. Living in S Wales and work based in Coventry meant a few things did not get pursued.

My intake noise is 102dB(A) at 5000 rpm - I guess I'll be steering clear of Suffolk then....

Half metre I believe.

Rev or Cheddar will know. They did the testing at Ettington and Blackpool.

If a Wedge is fitted with factory original spec exhaust, then there's little the cops can do I'd have thought, as the noise is required to be compatible with vehicle type and age.

Don't own a TVR, but live near Bury and would be very interested to see any more information about this.

I'd think anything with a remotely fruity exhaust (even if OEM fitted) would be over 81db... although obviously it depends how they test (i.e. it's never going to be 81 db at idle, and I can't see them being allowed to take your car and rev the crap out of it to get a reading...)

This must be a drive by reading on the pavement type test shirly. The Wedge that won the sound competition at BBWF was 95Db at idle. hehe
