Took the 280 for a drive yesterday, Still has power issue although it did get alittle better,Went round a roundabout 10mph and it sounded like i was doing 100. Every time i changed gear there is a clonking metal sound that sometimes sounds like dragging metal, The whole car shakes and rattles,, Im fearing the worst.

UJ's and wheel bearings? Easy to check.

Anti roll bar and associated bits on? The tubes that sleeve the tie rods through the chassis can wear away and the rubbers turn to dust and the washers get had by the tin worm.

Shockers tight? Shockers nadgered?

There is bonce.. the rear feels a bit hard and front bounces back a bit more, I had a little peek under there but space is lim and could only see wishbone bush and they looked ok,the steering is a bit loose at bolts on bulkhead..needs a tighten, It sounds like a metro that i used to have, That horrible squeaking noise when you hit a bump. The ball joints looked ok but i know you can never tell without thorough investigation.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, Had some people come round.. Im gonna drive it round a mechanics tom if they arent too busy so i can have a good look underneath, The bits i can see look ok with a little flaking and looks like someone at some point has undersealed some bits.. I popped the gear stick gaiter off and the frame looked ok, A bit dirty but need a good look to make sure, The gearbox is a bit loose.. Tennis ball size play all round.. Again if i could drive it and take maybe to Dan taylors to get a health check as previous convos have been realistic and helpfull.. I do want this car so bad it hurts and now the car i was intending to sell for a bit more cash has sprung a leak in the power steering, So now i own a rover 420gsi, A harley davidson, and a TVR, None of which i can use..

Good advice to get chassis checked over on ramp. 350i I recently broke had bad corrosion to shock mounts, seat belt mounts had rotted and a big crack in one of the welds. Rear shock mount was elongated due to incorrectly fitted dampers and shock rod nearly worn through. This car had a mot when it was laid up albeit 2 years ago and had lots of history. Pieces of paper are no substitute for a good inspection. Please don't think I'm preaching just if I was you I would for my own piece of mind get it checked before you drive it too much

the area you reported from the chassis (around gearstick) will be always in a perfect conditon..even on a rotten car.

partially underseal should be a warning.

the early tasmins had a pretty good powder coating factorywise which could be still present up to now.

beofre you invest too much time in technical issues, check your chassis and afterwards decide if the car is still worth to start sorting the technical problems.

as it seems that you do not have "real" automotive knowledge nor skills to do everything yourselves, please be aware what so called "mechanics" tell you:

consider that sellers are always lying
consider that garages want to earn money
consider that a garage will never tell you directly in your face that your chassis is shot..they may tell you "the chassis is sound"..which in reality means "its not too late to start restoring it"
consider that a car with a fresh MOT could have totally shot outtriggers

Sure you haven't been clamped ? rofl

I spent nearly 2000 quid on having the suspension sorted on my 280, and it still felt like I was rattling around in an empty skip. hehe

Other Wedges I had were almost smooth-riding and refined.
