Another stupid question - the car I have bought has the original 400 SE OZ split rim wheels, how do the covers come off??

TBH the covers are a nightmare, and the wheels themselves are not very good...

Tell you what, pop over to mine and Ill swap them for the alloys Ive got on my 280i to save you all the problems!!!

Failing that, someone will be along soon to give you a proper reply..

Did you get the key that came with the car when new?

I have a key but it doesn't seem to fit unless I am doing something extra dumb...

Should be screwed on at a point near the edge by a "special" screw. Its got a circular recessed head with a single offset hole in the recess. The key is a red handled thing with a cylindrical tip matching the recess, and a pin which matches the hole in the screw.

There are various different key heads. The ones on my old 400SE & the ones on the Griff were very similar. I could get them going with two small screw drivers working against each other. The ones I have at the mo sound similar to what's described above. You might have to file something out of an appropriate diameter rod.

Or you can drive to your tyre fitters for a set of new rubber, be asked whether you have the key for the wheel covers, rummage in your tool bagand not find one, only to have them dreg one up, and give it to you after they're done... wink

Pin punch and a screwdriver works.
