Im at me wits end...
Discussion
Hi peeps, Im really considering getting rid of me wedge,Im gonna loose money again,But its no good to me as its destroyed my desire to own a TVR, I made the classic mistake of not doing me home work.. I should of spent a monkey on me harley which would of doubled what im asking for it now, Put that to what i had and i would of had enough to purchase a decent TVR, Ive seen loads that i could of had and im completely gutted, so you might see a wedge project on the classified.
Sorry to hear that you are giving up so soon....They do have a habbit of giving problems, and trust me when i say that you do have to be patient!
I have been very close to decorating mine with a hard object (similar to Basil faulty towers style...) with the running problems i am having...
But WHEN it works (and i am dreaming of the day..) it just makes you grin from ear to ear!
The thing that makes wedge ownership so special, is that most people out there havent got a clue what it is like...you see them driving their 'sports cars' and they make comments in the pub like 'Oh TVR, dont they breakdown all the time?' and then you go roaring up the road making them wish you breakdown to make their boxter seem like the right choice!
Ha - Not for me!

I hear what your saying matt-man but ive had it for 4 weeks,I paid £1450 and its cost in excess of £1,000 to tax and insure, Ive spent around £400 on trying to remedy it and all it does is sit outside, covered over, non runner.Im not givin up on ever owning a TVR cos it has been my dream to own one forever but this particular one has been nothing but pure S
T and there was plenty of up and doin it TVRs for a bit more than what its cost me so far ( i had another 1500 to add)=£3,350.. Sometimes hard objects lead to regrets,, however fire completely instills prime evil instincts that cleanse the soul.. A feeling of elation, Of bliss, and total apeasment, In other words i might just burn the SOB.
Remember my post regarding sacrificial TVR, It might still happen.

They can be right b
ds at times, but carry on through! There will be light at the end of the tunnel, and you know when it's spitting flames again the cheshire-grin will be back.
ETA: Also, never ever add up the cost of your spendings, it's an easy mistake to make.

Cheers chaps.. dont know what id do without ya...Yep.. Dan taylor is helpfull,Spoke to them a while back, Also Elmwood TVR.. I was even contemplating Tickover in dartford as they are capri specs...Just at mo im strapped for readies, waiting on the classifieds, Too many tire kickers on there, Should of advertised somewhere like BSH for the harley...I know it will be worth it cos i intend later on to whack a 5-6 ltr ford 302 engine and gearbox in it.... For massive smiles all round.. Then ill rent a garage and strip down the ole colonge and just replace everything wether it takes a year or two and then look into getting a mini wedge made with rear engine mount with application of power straight to the back wheels.. Who needs a propshaft anyway..waste of rotation.. yes iam off me trolley but like you say you have to be mad to have a TVR, I need the cow to be running for 6-8 mnths and after that i couldnt give a w
k..
k..Don't give up Mark, you will like it once it's running smoothly again, i've had mine 3 yrs now and your allways doing something to them but when your out driving them and folk give you the thumbs up and shout awsome to you it make's all these irritating little jobs go away.
PS-- if stuck on anything just put your questions on here and someone will help you.

I would take the Capri route, cos I'm sure you haven't really given up
The 280s really are quite simple and once running will be very reliable.
When I bought mine it was running 90%, corrected the problem the first day.
It starts first click every time, second click after being stored for the winter. I have had to do brake and suspension work which was not pleasant but it really is a car that should give no problems. The Cologne engine is pretty bullet proof, change the oil, it'll go forever.
Don't read the threads about the 390SEs etc none of those issues apply to your car.
How about going to a couple of car shows and looking for some Capri owners.
Pick their brains, find who does their cars, maybe there is someone local.
OR maybe one of them will bring his CIS fuel gauge and help you. You could get lucky. It sounds like it's your turn
Nil desperandum

Don't give up on the wedge just yet.I got mine from my neighbour for not allot of money because it was hidden away in a lock-up for 14 years and hadn't even been started in all that time. I was quite lucky as mine just needed a fuel pump and filter new battery and an oil and filter change and it fired up after a couple of tries. After I got it started I went back to the house and the next morning went to start it again and the bloody thing wouldn't fire up!! After a day or two messing around I found the ECU had packed in and had to get another. Mine took a few months to get it road worthy and I have now had it on the road for just over a month and I am glad I spent the time getting it on the road because driving it made any hassle I had worth while. Just need to get the speedo working and the fuel guage working and better brakes and, and, and, and.
Talk to people and read as much as you can to try and help you solve problems and you will get there.

Well on the insurance side of things its the worst case senario, No no claims, No garage, No unlimited miles,Iam 47 and all my life people have claimed on me, Some like recently, Guy breaks on a roundabout to give way to left? Im sure this is england.. Anyway i hit his bumper and caused a little dent (new citreon)which actually popped out.. Bout two weeks later had a letter from insurance saying they paid out £2500 for the work, When i looked at the bill the bumper was £300 and it took them 41hrs labour...to fit? Mass had me over.. mugs. Anyway as regards to insurance its £30 more for TPFT on me rover 420gsi whereas the TVR is fully comp.Trust me im unluckily lucky.. Friday the 13.. Luckiest day of the year..I could tell you things that would make you cry..I definately believe in destiny and the TVR is just like some of the women i used to know.. Even the number plate is CYG and my nickname is zig (Mrzigazaga is my gammertag) The red symbolizes the devil, My father,The convertible is the sun and the engine is the holy ghost..
PS; I live in kebab, Iraq is free car tax by the way, In fact you dont even need a driving license.

Think we have all had dark days. I have had several but the force is strong in me so it was case of shutting the garage door and coming back after a nice hot cuppa and a good search through PH for the symptoms and fixes. First big problem on the 400 turned into a rebuild so looked at it as an opertunity to start from scratch with the motor, that was just after buying it. All the rest have been simple niggly things that need a different perspective to spot. Like not starting for two weeks due to flooding. The plugs were fouled and had to be baked to get going. Then replaced. The flooding was due to a throttle pot wrong and that finally let me down near Worcester on the M5 22:00 and finally low loaded home by 03:00 the next morning being told it was the fuel pump! Wasn't the pump and set the throttle pot up (Steve Hoogan ((sp?)) I think helped me here) and new plugs again and its been fine ever since (in that department).
Then there was taking the rad out for a recore and putting it back the rubber for the otter switch droppen on the side tank so had to take the sodding thing back out and I had run out of knuckles and elbows.
Then there was following the firing order that was a tad wrong and wondering why it never started....
Then there was.....

Thanks peeps, Trust me ive been looking at past and present posts, Ive gone through the epistles,Ive trawled the net for answers, Ive looked on ford forums,Ive talked to numerous experts,Elmwoods, Dan taylor, Tickover,About 5 independent mechanics,The forum, Even a friend who is a TVR man (in hospital at mo,fell off his bike) The trouble is there is so many things that sounds like it but not exactly,Like it cuts out when it gets hot and doesnt start, Well mine cuts out and then starts, Basically if you could drive it on tickover everything would be fab..Another thing that is on me mind is once its running right im still not out of the woods, Then ill have to deal with the clunk on changing gears, The dragging metal sound that speeds up with the speed of the car, The shudder when you change down, The rattling,The bang when you brake.. The.. I know i know, Youve all been there and are still there by the sound of things, I know it will be worth it in the end.. But i havent smiled for ages and i get a bit aggresive when im angry,And yes the vibes when driving it are cool,Even yesterday when i was mucking around with the firing order, Bang, Cloud of smoke.. Neighbours came out.. Oh i thought there was a gas explosion.. (dumb or what) and when i said its only my car they just smiled and went back in.. There is one question i really would like an answer to... If the firing order was incorrect would the timing still be ok at any point..???. The reason i say this is it was so hard to establish what is No1 on the dizzy? Ive tried, Standing Passenger side 3 o clock, Front of engine 12 o clock, The number one stamped on dizzy, I might even take some pics and see if anyone can spot the prob, Might be a good sub game for forum, Winner gets a bag of jelly babies..
