well the rebuild continues and today i took my fairly stripped out 400 up and down my road for the first time. not having ever driven the car i'm a little confussed on where reverse should be (gearknob not attached), i've driven many different TVR's before and all have had reverse back and down (next to 4th) but on this wedge it is forward and up (next to 1st) is this right?

Yes next to first - and you have to lift the gearlever to get it there.
The loud crunching is a standard Rover / TVR feature..... biggrin

If can sometimes be difficult to get reverse - engaging a forward gear first can help - again its a standard feature.

Obviously agree on the next to first bit, but surely it is pushed down and across, not lifted. Mine is anyway

thanks guys that's put my mind at rest that i haven't put something in back to front! mine will push accross and engage without lifting or pushing.

That's correct as the bottom of the lever in the remote butts up against a detent spring to stop accidental engagement on the LT77 gearbox, later gearboxes maybe different.
