Just need an informed opinion about taking out the engine & box. I'm about ready to take the engine out without the box but was wondering if it's easier to get both out together. They have to be separated anyway and I'm not fussed suffice to say that the height of my garage with the door up an over might restrict the height when getting the crane in situ...

Any views?

Yep agree - lots easier taking just the engine out.

When I did mine I got mixed responses about engine/engine gearbox together. But given the space allowed in your garage, headroom etc, then I would split them and take them out separately

I struggled a bit to get them separated in the engine bay, 20 years of being stuck together. But once apart, lifting out was a doddle

On the Racer I've always found it easier to take them out together, also a lot easier to align the gearbox back up again when putting it back together.

Also good to get the gearbox out to check the gearbox leaver bushes.

Thanks guys - you have confirmed the logic behind the process the pics are much appreciated. I've got the starter & the 6 bell housing bolts to do plus the o/s manifold to take out as that's being replaced.

Took my engine out leaving the 'box in the car. Plenty of room to get at the bellhousing bolts. I found the bottom rubbers that support the 'box had all but dissolved in leaking transmission fluid.

Well after some fumbling I got the engine out this morning - struggled to find out what was preventing separation from the G/Box only to find it was 2 x 10mm bolts - moments after their removal the engine was out and bolted on to its stand. Tomorrow the box comes out.

I had to laugh because a certain well known specialist TVR specialist located very near Goldaming Surrey reckons he had the engine and box out to fix the speedo drive when I first got my car all those years ago - all I can say is that he was a lying bastaad along with certain car located nearby dealer who fleeced me for £300...Cants.
