My 280i has taken up smoking. Seems to be leaking from somewhere upfront as well as having a very damp area around the entire oil pan. I'm guessing the front seal has given up after 25 years. I'm assuming that should just be a crank bolt to get the pulley off and reseal. Only real question is anybody know what the seal size is. Hoping a mid 70s capri or a Bronco II seal is the same so I can get it locally. As for the oil pan. Again hoping it is the same across the 2.8 range so I don't need to pay shipping from England. Also, I'm hoping it is possible to replace by just lowering the pan and doing it in place rather than lifting the motor.

Thanks

I think the front oil seal is fitted into the timing gear cover on the V6... you probably don't even need to drop the sump.

I do as I know I'm leaking from the pan as well but that isn't causing the smoking or I wouldn't see how it would be.

does the smoke come from unearneath the car or out of the exhaust?

if smoking is caused by oil dripping onto exhaust i pressume the rocker cover gasket(s) are leaking.

if you plan to change them also use the chance to get the valve clearances checked and set.

a wet oilsump could be also caused by the sump gasket beeing perished or the the bolts of the sump may have come loose a bit (not unkommon).

clean your engine thoroughly, take the car for a short ride, than check again for oilleaks.

thats the best way to locoalize where the leakage is comming from.

You can see it coming from the right hood "scoop" and in front of the right headlight. You can definately smell oil though. Exhaust looks good and clean, valve clvers are new this spring and not leaking. Already cleaned the engine up real good but it really isn't giving any good indication. I know the oil pan gasket is pretty shot but not so bad that it drips. If I'm already doing a seal though IMO this would be the time to do it. Only drips come down around the steering rack, hence the thought that it might be the front seal.

Correct, remove front pulley then access shouldn't be to bad.

Regarding the sump gasket, I would advise you to use the later gasket as fitted to the 2.9 engines, it is a direct replacement but unlike the 2.8 cork gasket that comes in MANY pieces (8 from memory) and gets fitted together with sealant, this on is a single piece rubber type gasket, much better.
