No wonder the ride was like a donkey...

Hi folks..Well heres the culprit..All this rust came from inside the fuel tank..10yrs worth..No wonder she was running like a complete mare..It was even found in the metering head..WUR..Injectors..pump..Glad the other tank was plastic coated..Many thanks to dwgriffith for the secondhand tank..would of been up poo creek without a paddle..wah..cheers.

Hi jeff..Not long hopefully..waiting on downpipe which has had to be made and cherry bomb mid silencers to arrive(cheaper than Orig)..so might be weekend or early next week.. apparently shes running properly..it will be such a relief as ive had the car for three months now and havent driven it in good working order yet..soon though..cheers..mark
Just wondering - a number of threads have been about filling tanks.
With a 2" equalizer hose near the top and the two smaller balancing hoses, science says the tanks should equalize eventually. So what causes the 2 tanks not to fill evenly???
I'm personally convinced my 2nd tank doesn't fill at all. I have had the hoses changed (but didn't drop the tanks which apparently are the first pieces you start with when you build a wedge as they go deepest into the middle) but the shop didn't find a clog, blockage or reason why the tanks don't fill or equalize. Unfortunately they put all the new hoses back on before I could get over and eyeball it.
Mr. Z, now that the rust is out, does your shop see any reason why you can't put about 15 gallons (sorry - unknown number of litters) into 2 empty cross-connected 7.5 gallon tanks?

The early cars have a swirlpot with two connections, one to each tank. With a 2" equalizer hose near the top and the two smaller balancing hoses, science says the tanks should equalize eventually. So what causes the 2 tanks not to fill evenly???

So when filling up it has to initially get into the second tank via the swirlpot. Later during the fill it reaches the upper hoses, but by that time the car at the next pump has put in 30 gallons and most have given up
.Hi chaps.. Not 100% but looking at the diagram you would have to fill up to the top hose before it fills into second tank..some fuel gets sent back to the second tank if not needed but thats minimal..probably what jeff said..I do remember when i first got it and put £50 petrol..was ok up to £30 and then i had to slow the filling as it was half way up the filler neck and drained slower..but went in..bit of a weird set up..I think the swirl pot has a filter which would probably slow the flow a bit..It seems a bit naff as they could of made it one tank with a single feed to a swirlpot keeping overflows and returns as there isnt anything in the middle except the joining pipes..maybe for cost?

Not quite true: there's a big f-off chassis, propshaft and exhaust in the way
I reckon they should of used 2x2" joining instead of 1x2" and 1x5/8"..Theres enough room to have em and it would of made filling a bit quicker..I dont think they were thinking about the tanks untill they had built the chassis..They might as well of put it in the boot..your sitting on it anyway..
I think wedg1e is right as regards to not much room under there..maybe someone who welds could modify the chassis where the tanks are..maybe remove small cross members and re-strengthen somehow and maybe possibly get a rectangular plastic tank made that houses a combined pump,swirlpot,filter..Its probably not poss and one of the things that will remain an issue forever...
Ive been looking at loads of pics from people that do chassis restoration..maybe its poss..

The rear 40-50% support that travels towards the trailing arm (from 11 to 5 oclock)looks like it could be re-positioned..just to make a bit more space..maybe..??

.. Or maybe just lowered the top pipes a little.. maybe baby..or stop being so impatient and spend a little longer filling up..more time to gloat i spose..
