Has anyone got any idea what oil would be good for the 4 speed gearbox attached to a 280i engine?

I have just dropped the existing oil which looked pretty milky, and it looks like the box has been getting hot as there is a bit of 'dry' residual rust on the casing, the kind you get from heating the rust up! so a bit of new oil might cheer her up a bit!

Im bored senseless as work has dried up and Im 'working from home' and so decided to play in the garage.

The exhaust blow is being fixed, where someone previous has removed the middle boxes and inserted flexible pipe with an insert at one end which has rusted through, new insert and a bit of compound and new clamps and she will be singing again....

Oh, the interior is now back to the original blue and suede thanks to Ian H for the spare seats.

What to do next!!

Not wishing to denegrate motor factors here but WTF do they know? They have a parts book and some stock to sell. OTOH modern oils have improved on the old ones in some ways; ultimately you pay your money and you take your risk. For all you know the gearbox is 1000 miles from self-destructing anyway; if it does, will you blame the oil?

I was concerned on the EP oils due to not knowing if the early boxes had phosphur bronze internals or not, other than that, gearbox oil is a bit of a mystery!

what do the racers on here use and would that be relevant to mine.

Bearing in mind its got a box that potentialy has 90k on it,(not sure if it was changed with the new engine 12 years and 8k ago) and although it sounds sweet with a bit of noise when you 'hold' it on gear, there were no issues with it, simply wanted an idea as to what would be best to put in it!

If it were my car and the oil came out nasty I would change it twice.
Stick in some 80 for 200 miles, then change it again.
Oil is cheap. (and I can be little anal at timessmile
