The 420SE was quite rare as they was not a production model as such, they was 390SE with a custom tuned 4.2 engine. I only know of 1 other one, so 7 could be right.
Problem is there are quite a few low volume wedge variations, and think only the SEAC's will be collectable, and maybe a standard 400SE as it was the last version and a fixed specification.

"THIS CAR WAS FULLY RESTORED IN 2004 AND THEN PARKED UP AND NEVER USED FOR 6 YEARS A REAL SHAME AND WASTE THIS IS A GREAT OPPERTUNITY FOR A WINTER PROJECT FOR A TVR ENTHUSIAST, WE DRAINED OFF THE OLD FUEL AND REPLACED WITH FRESH AND THE CAR STARTED UP AND SOUNDS NICE, BRAKES ARE ALL FREE EVEN CLUTCH WAS FREE HAD IT ON ARE RAMP THE TUBE CHASSI IS SOLID AND ONLY SUFFERS FROM SURFACE RUST, BODY IN VERY GOOD CONDITION, HOOD REAR WINDOW FALLEN IN STITCHING ROTTEN, INTERIOR NEEDS FULL RESTORE"

A tad contradictory there. rolleyes It's clearly a typical wedge; needs work, maybe worth £5K once finished. I have a bargepole, if anyone wants to borrow it... biggrin

And when did the simple word 'our' get transmuted into 'are'? I see this all the time, what the hell were they teaching in schools after I left??

Well i guess if its a rare model then its worth restoring..it is british history and we dont do near enough to remind people of how great we once were..(and mad)..I know every circumstance is different but everytime i see these cars that have been locked up for years..abandonded..dumped..i think would you treat a beautifull woman this way..No..as she would be long gone and it would be you thats dumped, abandoned and possibly locked up.
Wait..whats happening to me..im becoming passionate about a car..Nurse!!
Actually ive just seen what wedg1e pointed out and if the stitching is rotten what conditions has it been stored in? mine sat for 10yrs in a dry store and my stitching aint rotted..and if that bloody mouse hadnt got in there then the interior would be ok as well..mmm..

In a discussion about surviving cars some time back, I think the most optimistic suggestion was that there had been 10 420SEs... could be as low as 5 IIRC. I think it was Robson's book that pointed out the sizeable price difference over a 390SE (already £23K by the time mine was built) which would have taken buyers seriously into Porsche 911 Turbo territory, you don't imagine many people would chose a Blackpool kitcar over a German thoroughbred... a general perception you understand, not mine wink

"The engine actually displaces 4.4 litres, developing a documented 293 bhp and 277 ft/lb torque."

I'd have expected more torque to go with that much power.

Wedg1e asks

what the hell were they teaching in schools after I left??

They are teaching them that people who drive big engined cars instead of bicycles are evil and responsible for the death of all the bunnies in the world.

It's tempting to say "Not even with your bargepole!" smile

Taking the rarity angle into account I'd give three grand tops, and that only once I'd thoroughly checked out the authenticity of the car, in particular that the original engine is still fitted.

I had a 420. whistle

the 420SE's use the earlier 390 Bodies, more of a 350 body with bit added on.
The one in the picture is the later body style. also the 420SE's had a modified plenum.
Should not be too hard to match the engine number to the log book, also the AFM etc should also be stamped with the Same NCK number.
The 420SE's was a lot different to the 400SE/430SE/500SE

You mean the one in my pic Leigh ?

Yep, that of course is my old S2 390, and as you say, totally different to the early 390 that the 420 was based on...just trying to be amusing. tongue out

Oh, and on the 450 thread you say you've had your 400 15 years ? !

So how come you always look about 30 to me ? confused

I am definitely getting old ! laugh

Indeed; you can see the hose adapter plate on the throttle body.

I know you was only joking but just thought I'd add some facts,

yes I always surprise people when I tell them how old I am, also come to think of it I've had it 16 years now, got it when I was 25.

OK
So back to how this started, ebay ads,
There are a few which seem to quote silly figures, bhp £ etc,
But the prices are as an average climbing, not a lot but they are, so yes we have a car that isnt loosing money in depreciation , unless we spend lots on them (O thats me!) Why all the fuss over odd cars or some badges on the back, When I got mine a few years ago it was because I loved the car, it was not how it came out of Blackpool and it is, has not got any better since I got it. But it is a TVR and not a normal TVR it is a Wedge. Mine just says TVR no 350i , 420i, 450i , why upset trade descriptions! just enjoy, most people cant.

My 400SE had no model markings of any sort on it...not a problem.

I'm sure you'll realise that the nick-picking and piss taking is purely because we're Wedge nuts who do get off on the detail...not quite to the extent of Kennel Club type rules thank goodness, but just something to gossip about as a change from torque settings and clearances, etc.
All adds to the general Wedge knowledge pot too. smile

I think the only reason the models got bought up was due to him quoting it as being rare, and a rare TVR being sold for 28,000 was just pointing out yes they was quite rare and it did seam to be a genuine 420SE, but currently as you point out a wedge is just a wedge, apart from the SEAC's which are the only ones seen as special.
Most of the posts seem to be tongue in cheek, but sorry if this did not come over in the posts, most people will know there not many that love wedges and keeping them on the road more than me.
