Just had my renewal letter from the club, which i have been a member of for at least 20 years, and am seriously thinking about not renewing. With Pistonheads etc cannot see the need to rejoin the club.
Just wondered what the rest of you have done??

Hi

I think its a personal thing, you ever want to be in the Club or you don't. Some of us support TVR's in General so the clubs the place to be, but if you are just a "Wedge" only fan then I can see why you dont want to be.
I know in the past they haven't supported BBWF well, but things can and are changing!

I really have to say this as I have one of my "Wedges" on the TVRCC stand at the NEC next week!

I've been in the club for around 15yrs and I have the same reservations these days. Still a member but not sure exactly what I get out of the club these days: Mania was always a good day out but that's not happened for a while, without any new cars coming out Sprint does get a bit repetitive (very well presented but does it really still need to be monthly?), and on the rare occasion I have contacted committee members they don't always reply!

On the other hand, we have a very active and well run region here in SE London so that does make it worthwhile.

Hi chaps..was considering joining a club..RT has an offer for club members as regards to chassis re-juvenation which seems a bargain..I guess it has advantages..Zig

Will the BBWF feature in sprint, more recent events have featured,It will be long in the memory before the wedge fest appears in the mag now.Surely events should appear in order of when they took part,it cannot be that complicated. It was a cracking event.

The club has its uses - you can take it or leave it IMO.

With car clubs (as with all things, really), you get out what you put in. I'm not really what you call an 'active' member, but I think it's a really good club. I don't know about coverage of BBWF, but I guess someone has to write the articles, and I don't suppose there are any full time journalists on the club's payroll. So this means someone has to write up the events and contribute the reports to Sprint.

I'm not sure what's to be gained by asking an internet forum if you should renew or not - either you enjoy being in the club and think it's worth the fee, or you don't.

As for these forums replacing a car club - perhaps, but only if the car club wasn't that great to start with.

Hi

Ref the BBWF article or lack of, I will be speaking to the person who promised to do the article next weekend! "Sprint" can only print articles if somebody submits them!

I joined back in about '96 so that I could write in to 'Sprint' and ask for help with the Tasmin... but then along came the Domino/Egroups forum, shortly followed by PH... and the reason for being a member disappeared.
My car's already been featured as a centrefold biggrin and I've been to a couple of 'Back Home's (paid through the nose for the crap lunch as well)... doesn't hold much fascination for me now.
I wouldn't like to suggest that the majority of road-serviceable wedges are on PH, but I don't think the car club offers more to those that aren't on here...

The Club also does a lot of useful background jobs that you don't notice if you don't need them.

For example they are an interface between owners and the DVLA and hold a useful archive - so the club could be useful in registering a barn find and ensuring it has the original reg no and retains its tax free status.

TVRCC also adds its voice to other historic clubs to lobby on all sorts of things where weight of numbers makes a difference.

The fact that there is only one big club for TVR owners has avoided some fragmentation/clannishness.

The Club can have old fashion attitudes to information access for non-members - but on the whole it is substantially better than nothing. TVRCC, like most other clubs, is made up of individuals with individual views on how to take things forward, join it and change it from within.

There are plenty of clubs out there for car marks that havent made cars for over 30 years 'Triumph sports six club' for one so the fact no new cars have come out for a while doesnt count. I think if people stop joining and the club dispands i think it will affect the TVR community as a whole as with there being no factory it gives a central pillar to existing TVRs.

They also do a good job keeping the TVR name alive, also there are one the biggest sponsors of the TVR challenge, and made the difference of us being able to be on TV.

Taking the cynical view and playing Devil's advocate for a moment... they're 'only' cars. Is there an owner's club for 1980s Indesit washing machines? Or how about Qualcast Concorde lawnmowers? At the end of the day they're built to do a task, not everyone is a 'club man' and feels the need to homo-bond just because they've bought the same product as a percentage of the rest of mankind.
Granted, for those who feel the need, the club's there, and hopefully the members' interest will keep it going - but not everyone has that need.
One thing I've noticed through the years with various different 'societies' (starting with ham radio back in the early 80s, hey Phil biggrin ) is how they seem to attract failed politicians or ex-corporals. They have to form committees and take votes... it leads to cliques and the 'in' crowd. Discuss biggrin

If there is I'm in. Imagine the AGM!!! biggrin

I joined the TVRCC recently. I'm not really one for clubs but I felt after 16 years of Tiv ownership that if I joined I would be doing a little something to support the marque going forward in the years to come. I honestly don't think it gives anything to me but I think they do a good job and it's one of those things that I suspect we would miss if it wasn't there.

Is it rude to say I kind of viewed it as a charitable donation?

Membership will be less than £40 next year, saved well over £100 this year on labour costs via the 15% discount offered by RaceProved to club memebers; not really a difficult decision to be honest.
