Contacted douglass valley regarding a set of 15" lattice off a write off wedge. (just to test the water)
The only ones they had were off the "maroon" coloured car, and as such had been painted in the centres to colour match the body.
Unless my car was a perfect match for those wheels, you are looking at a refurb...right???
(cant imagine anyone needing them "as is")
£350 PLUS posting PLUS VAT !!!!!!!!!!
On my life!!!
I st you not.....£350 +++++++

You could then trade em in for a refurbed set for £240 on fleabay no doubt!!

We need to keep these write offs out of the hands of these Scalpers !!

WOW..That is crazy chit..I wonder what happened to the one in bits on here a while back..Perhaps we need a wedge appeal and somewhere we can secure the cars..A TVR heaven..Or haven..Even stock and catalogue everyone elses bits and bobs..Keep it in the family so to speak..Necraphillia a game the whole family can play..Seriously though it might be worth considering..Zig

I always wondered how they can charge VAT on something that's 2nd hand. How does that work? Surely the VAT was already paid when it was new...

you think the Government would let them sell stuff without charging VAT, WAKE UP, you dreaming :-)

Had the same with my Chim, £150 for one wheel, I didn't even reply.
Eventually found one for £40 within 30 miles.
I suspect they and the other 2? scal.. scrapers, have so boxed up the market that they have monopoly & can charge what they like.

And the were 3 figures! Suffice to say I didn't get my wallet out!!

VAT means Value Added Tax, they must pay tax on the value they have added to the goods.

So if they buy the wheels at £0.00 and sell them at £350.00 then they charge VAT on the full amount.

In reality it is much more complex than that but if they sell to businesses who can claim the input VAT back (garages and the like) then VAT just keeps getting added on until it reaches the consumer (us) - who pay it all.

If they are turning over more than 68,000 per annum then they have to charge vat by law,I know cos I've just de-registered. Also when our cars are written off its usually the insurance companies that then own the car who have deals going with breakers so that's where they end up feeding what's left on the roads. There are regulars on here buying things for peanuts and less then passing them on to you and I for a big fat profit, and they converse on this forum like they're ya best mate!

Aye, but precisely what 'value' have they added?

IMHO (and that of many others of course) VAT ought to be payable on new goods, but surely the 'recycling' of used goods by, say, a breaker's yard is the same as me flogging bits to you from my crashed car. I can't charge you any 'tax' other than what you see as the fair purchase price.
Oh wait a minute: to change it would mean the government being REASONABLE... rolleyes

I agree that if say you (as a business) bought a pair of scruffy OZ 16x9s, spent hours refurbishing them to showroom condition and then offered them for sale, some 'value' has been added, but it's hard to apply that logic to a rusty exhaust manifold. And whilst it's probably also true that there's as much trading done cash-in-hand-what-VAT-guvnor as there is by the HMRC-approved method, what incentive would there be for people to work hard and be model taxpayers if the system was so tight that money couldn't change hands other than through strict, government-controlled channels...?

Typically the cars are bought from the insurers or public VAT-free (or at least there is no VAT reclaimable) but they charge VAT on the difference between the buying and selling price. When you are dismantling a car I'm sure that is harder to calculate on the bits that you sell.

Agreed the 'value' is hard to justify but they are investing in the cars and storing them so that the parts don't deteriorate, until they are needed. At the end of the day they'll charge what the market will bear, if you can shop around then do so!

Looking back through one some of my e-mails, I was after a lower trailing arm link. I was quoted £125 + delivery & VAT. I kindly pointed out that new ones could be sourced at £51.90, but there was no room to negotiate.

Picked up a good few parts from these guys and overall I have been very happy. They have really pulled out all the stops when I needed a replacement 4 ltr TVR engine that was delivered within 24hrs at a price better than the ones on fleabay or other avenues, Jeep alloys came from them, and recently the LSD diff, cheaper than the rest quoted. Admittedly I have gone elsewhere when quoted prices too high but if they are competitive then I use them and cannot complain about the service.

FcensoredK me.. Just had a look at that breakers..They certainly have a wide selection of TVRs,,However mangled they are..I might ring and see how much for a set of seats..I suppose some bits will be dearer than others..They must be open to cash deals..even big companies do that...You can get charged VAT on secondhand goods..But not if they are sold as scrap..
