400SE Speedo Cable Question
Discussion
Quick question for you.
Assuming a speedo cable needs replacing on a 400SE what is involved in doing it?
I've tried doing some searches and want to find out if its straightforward or if there is a need to take the gearbox out in order to get the job done??
Anyone here done one on a 400 series?

Just got a new cable on mine..
There are two cables.
1. From the speedo to a box on the drivers side inner wing area. Remove cable from the connector box to speedo - spin cable and see if speedo moves.
2. Connector box to gear box - remove cable from box and spin it - if it will not spin then cable probaly ok.
It's just 1 bolt (about 8~9mm spanner) to remove from box on - fairly easy to get
to once under passenger side of car.
Cost was £24 plus vat and loads of carriage from speedy cables.

In addition to the above - once you have pulled out the speedo drive from the gearbox - poke your finger or longish implement inside and feel for the speedo gear on the mainshaft - if that spins freely or moves up and down the mainshaft - you have a problem to which there are 2 decisions to make. 1. Drive without a speedo or 2. Take the gearbox out to replace as it cannot be done in situ.
I had the same problem and opted for the gearbox out and re-build route to include new clutch parts as part of the refurb. I tried living with it for a couple of years then I began losing gearbox oil over the exhaust to which I though enough was enough!!

although with speedy you can alter the spec - I asked for the new part to be 4 inches longer and they did just that. Should make routing it a bit easier.

Thanks for the replies folks. Sounds like a straight forward job so long as the drive bit inside the gearbox is ok.
Yep, defo check gearbox drive first, as that may be a more expensive fix.I wasted money on a new cable for my 400, when it was the above that was knacked.

When I put the cruise control on my car I needed the 400SE-style cable as I used the same pulse generator to drive the cruise ECU. However I wanted the generator out of sight so they made me a cable 6" long that leaves the pulse gen behind the speedo and not in the engine bay.Small point: an early 400SE with flapper injection would need the 'standard wedge' style cable that goes direct to the speedo...

I had wondered about that, couldn't think why a flapper would need a speed sensor.Tony - You bought another 400SE then ?
Yes I have a 400SE on the way, not picking it up for a couple of weeks though. Its Gandalf's old car, the white one.
Back on the cables question...
Still waiting to pick the car up (damn snow!) but have been told the smaller cable of the two is at fault. Fortunately the gearbox drive is fine according to the garage.
Which of the two cables is the smaller one and is it possible to get a hold of this cable separately, Is this something speedy cables would stock without having to send off the old one for them to copy?
