Gear Lever Install

Has anyone taken out and replaced their gear lever? I've got a problem trying to re-fit my lever and I cannot recall where and how the anti rattle spring gets back into place. Does it face the front or rear of the selector slot and how do you get the bastad back in...!! I had one of those days where nothing went right.....apart from getting my mainfolds on!!
