Hi chaps...This car is doing my brain in..put me new number plates on this morning,Thought id go for a drive as the weathers not too bad and now i keep hearing and feeling a clunk when i put it in gear,There is a little bit of movement forward when this happens a bit like an automatic and mainly happens as iam taking me foot off clutch..Theres a bit more of it when i de-accelerate..Also some rattling which sounds like rotating metal which comes and goes..I also think the front number plate looks scensorede now as its too short..Cheers..ziga

The metallic sound could be the release bearing on the clutch...not the end of the world, but would eventually need replacing. Not too dear.
You may be able to replace it through the hole where the clutch actuating arm goes in on that box...will check in my manual.

Edit to add...looks like the box would have to come out IF that's the problem. frown

Movement could be weak engine or gearbox mountings...again, not the end of the world, and easy enough to replace 'en situ'.

I think you need fellow Wedgers in your area to come round and have a look at your car.

Put out an SOS !

Number plate looks fine IMO. smile

Could be knadgered tiebar bushes or lower arm bushes causing the wheels to rub; no point in adjusting anything if the bushes are shot - and since they shouldn't 'drift' out of adjustment it's unlikely to be anything other than wear and tear, or maybe related to whatever caused the bent spring top mounts.

The clunk on taking-up the drive is most probably UJs but could be trailing-arm bushes.
You can check the UJs if you have a competent helper; run the car up onto a kerb on one side. Lie in the gutter hehe underneath the rear then have somebody put the car in gear (engine running of course) with handbrake on and 'bounce' the clutch pedal around its biting point. If there's any play in any of the UJs it'll be glaringly obvious, you'll see one side of the joint moving relative to the other. Equally, if it's t/arm bushes you'll see the whole suspension jumping around...

Yes, no problem. Well it can be *&^%$£ work undoing the nut and then you'll need to set the geo up but compared to what you've got guess work would probably be better. I'd take up Mr Tank's offer ...

When I think of some of the virtual wrecks I drove in my youth, held together with filler, wire and baling twine. hehe

What about the plywood customised front, painted in Dulux ?...and if you look at the passenger side front bumper, you can see it's tied on with electrical wire. rofl

I thought that car was just sooooo cool. biggrin

Lol! I was only 22....an innocent.

I had some fun with that one (bought it with the 'imaginative' bodywork).

The engine started to knock, so I went to the scrapper for another 'sale or return' one at £17.50.

Anyway, me and my mate laboured for 10 hours out in the rain swapping them over, and bugger me the one we put in was rattling more than the one we took out ! cry

So, had to fix the engine after all. irked

It was a real bird-puller though. All they saw was a red convertible being driven by a super-handsome dude. hehe

Halcyon days.

25 years ago ,i used to drive stuff like that - you just seemed to connect with them, and they meant something beyond just being a car.

Lost that feeling for a long time..

Until i bought a Tivver wink.

"Is this car safe to drive..I do have an 80 mile all round trip on sunday"

this car is definateloy NOT safe to drive, nor roadworthy.

so b4 driving any distances please sort-out the problems...as i think you don´t want to harm any innocent people in case of an accident?

back to the first pictures: who removed the nice looking square shaped, chromed, rear view mirros and fitted these ugly cheapish plastic ones from halfords?

Not roadworthy based on what?

If you're referring to the wheel rubbing on full lock then mose Wedges are not roadworthy, including my 400SX.

As it turns out the MOT test for wheels rubbing on bodywork specifically states that the front wheels are off the ground - the suspension then drops down and it passes.

I'm sure Mark's suspension mounts have also been through many MOI's as they are right now - probabaly caused by taking air on a hump-backed bridge. They look solid to me.

As for the funny noise from the 'box, well, don't get me started ;^)

I'll bring my overalls on Sunday...

Llany writes some odd stuff.

From what you've posted it looks like it should be OK to drive a short distance but I'd be wary about the rubbing tyre and the ride height looks a little low. These are simple and low cost things to sort out.

The wedge is one of the safest, if not the safest, TVR out there having passed the USA crash tests.

Mark, it's not easy trying to work out what's wrong with your car by e-mail, some things you can others you cant in this case it would be better if someone had a look and listen at it.
You've done a lot to the car because it's been layed up for a while [that's expected] just think ahead when your at BBWF, drinking, drive outs, laughing and joking with others about the time you had sorting it up.

cheer up bud.

jonny.
