Contemporary Bearings

Spent time telling the garage owner that 400se would have Zodiac or Granada wheelbearings. He took one out yesterday, spoke to his supplier about the back end being Jag and got... XJ6 ones sent down.....
After the 'told ye so' exchange, I double checked with Chris Ridgers, through tvrcc helpline (who is always happy to help a fellow wedger) and felt confident enough to repeat "mk IV Zodiac or Mk I Granada" . Phone call from garage later; markings on 'cassette type' bearings = 309946AC ...and the local, reputable supplier described these as being from...
5 SERIES BMW
£39 each , inc all the seals, I am told.
Wonder how many other manufacturers use them?! Does this make it easier -or harder- to get the right ones?

You need to be careful here. The bearing is off a MK2 Granada. When fitted to this car there is a front seal and a rear seal, which are different. When fitted to the TVR they used the same seal for front and rear (can't remember which one). So if you order it as a kit you are going to be a seal short. Never heard of it being off a BMW before.

Ian, hope you are well. Very very close now. Just took out insurance last week and hope to take it for the MOT at weekend......without the hood, still sorting that out. I now know why the windows hit the roof at the rear edges !!! Oh and the hoop is not a solid piece of steel, just fiberglass.
I was reliably informed that the sprung oil seals work within a region of a few microns ( Thats thousandts of a millimeter to the uninitiated), and that any kind of scratch in this area will render the oil seal useless.
I was advised to ensure the axle surface is very smooth, especially in the contact zone, free from rust, and lubricated incase of accidental contact, and to tape up the thread before inserting the axle into the hub. He went on to restate that any scratch on the seal surface, the seal is fit only for the rubbish bin.
So why do the bearing kit makers have the seal loose in the box? Or did I buy a poor brand? (First Line FBK 021 Refs to QWB140C, WBK137)
Anyway seems RS sell them for £1.06 so I may buy a few.

Job done - £255 all in. (labour at £23 per hr) Much better than f
it up myself or having car off road for a month rather than a few days.
Single massive cassette bearing - nearly 4 inches wide - c/w granada ones he showed me. Is this a case of evolution at the factory at a given stage in 1990? Or "Whoops, Cant get them any more cos we aint paid 'em, Let's try these..."?
Will let y'all know if the near side wheel drops off, for the want of a local mechanic listening to my suggestions (re securing techniques)courtesy of you guys and Chris Ridgers at tvrcc
Now for 2 more new tyres, then book in for tvr power to do their bit. ££
(Actually, they give clearest and fairest quotes for one price work I have found so far)
