I am a little confused about exhausts on 350i and 390 wedges, some have a twin outlet on one side of the car, some have two single outlets one on each side of the car, and some have a large bore one sided outlet. This doesn't seem specific to age or anything, which is the best, and are they interchangeable?

I think the early 390se's had a central box splitting into two separate smaller boxes exiting far apart. 350i's I think had a central box and twin outlets on the O/S of the car. Later 390 / 400 / 420 / 450 had a central box with a single large bore exit pipe on the O/S. As for interchangibility, I put a 400 style over axle pipe with a single large bore onto a 350. Only thing I would say about the early 390 system was it was a bit too quiet! PHJayV8 said:

Simply, the early cars were trailing arm so have the outlet each side. Later A frame cars had the twin outlet on one side and the SEACs and the like had the large bore on one side.Hi
My 350i (no 1) is so quiet compared with my SEAC! The differance in exhust runs is also so differant.
The 350i pipes come off the manifolds join together on the left side of the gearbox. Then go into a single box under the passangers seat, then up over the nearside drive shaft into another box which then exits on rear near side as a single pipe! You can
louder !!!!!!!!!!!!
The SEAC pipes come off the manifolds into a central box, then a very large bore pipe goes under the dff across to the off side where it emerges as a gas main size pipe!!!!!!!!
and
defenders are needed!
Andy.

Noisy git..
..You wouldnt get away with that round here..Too many speed humps..Big buggers as well..If you you own a pre-cat then go for a smaller bore with a slightly bigger bore for resonance but keeping any step up in size smooth..Obviously keeping your emissions under 3.5 percent..You gotta think about the environment..F
K the neighbourhood...
Or something like this maybe...

My 350i seems different again.
2 into 1 centre box hanging below the propshaft, that then splits into 2 again. This leaves me with 2 single bore exits on each side of the bumper.
although you cannot see in the picture, mine is 2 seperate boxes uner the propshaft, that then goes in to 1 for a short run, then splits again under diff. the first time it was made it was 2 seperate pipes all the way through, but this was way too loud so i had it made as above.2 into 1 centre box hanging below the propshaft, that then splits into 2 again. This leaves me with 2 single bore exits on each side of the bumper.

mine was single on one side, until i had this made

Mmmm,I like this too,my lad has kept on about this type but I wasn't sure about ground clearance,I suppose cutting out the pipe over the suspension for this style makes a difference to sound,I've only got the one centre box,yes I like.
