Oil pressure relief valve
Discussion
Hello Tony,
I assume you are talking about the length of time for the oil pressure light to extinguish after start up? If so, and this is just my opinion, I would not think so unless the spring was broken and stopping the plunger from sitting on it's seat. But then your oil pressure would be pants all the time. For me, a week spring would only affect the pressure reading and not the time for the system to pressurise.
Regards Andy.

The rest of the time the pressure is very good
Thank
Tony

Does it change depending on how long the car has been sitting, are you 100% your oil filter has the one way valve. as it could be taking time to get upto pressure due to having to fill the oil filter.
yes if I use the car around 8 in the morning for half hour and the nip up the road around 3 or 4 in the afternoon it only take a couple of seconds but left for a day or so it’s around 3 to 4 second for the light to go out. I will change the oil filter the weekend and see if that helps.Tony
The Rover V8 can run for almost 5 minutes with virtually no oil, I don't think 4 seconds once every morning without revving the nuts off it is going to make any difference.
(I know 'cos I ran my P5 about 3 miles on no oil and it didn't seize, and was fine after that after it had had a good drink)

My oil pressure light goes out after a couple of seconds but every now and again I get the guage "bouncing around" and hitting the top then drops back down to about 30. Changing the filter has improved things but is still a bit weird. Checked things electrically to make sure got a good earth and nothing loose. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

Same time to build up the oil pressure on my wedge in the OP mentioned situations.
Think that it is important to use the right oil (20W50), but in winter 15W50 is is much better for the engine in colder conditions.
Using 'thinner' modern oil (0W30, etc) is not good either as the oil pump isn't designed for this and pressure build up becomes an issue.
Replaced the oil pressure relieve valve (standard for standard) a couple a years ago and oil pressure improved with a warm and hot engine, as the spring can weaken over time. Together with an idle set to 1000 rpm no issues regarding oil pressure on my stock 350i.
As Adam pointed out, probably nothing to worry about at the moment, but keeping an eye on it that pressure has built up before you drive off is always good

Hello Andy,
I had a good chat with Richard Thorpe at RT racing and was told not to worry too much, I have good pressure hot at tick over and when cruising.
Because of the way the oil filter is position and the length of the pipe work he said you can get a bit of draining.
He was out of sock with oil filters when I ask, I think I have 15/40 at the mo and will change the filter when I swoop to 20/50 when the warmer weather gets hear.
