Hi peeps..Just had a call from the garage and he has found the culprit for the violent shaking..Apparently the prop bearing has well gone and has caused the prop to shear the housing around it and will need a new nose welded in..Hopefully it hasnt got bent, Although when this happened i wasnt moving that fast, It kinda happened gradually..I suppose the grinding and clonking were the first signs of it..The guy at the garage is popping it into a guy that does props which is on his way home,,Hopefully he can fix it and its not gonna cost the earth..Otherwise ill be on the lookout for a prop..I suppose im lucky that it didnt happen whilst on the motorway doing 70mph..

It shouldn't be a heart attack bill.

For the future note that the two propshaft UJs and the four half shaft ones are consumables, the life of which can be extended by regular greasing, and as such should be checked and greased regularly.

Zig, if you have no joy with your man, i used a company called "Recoprop" in Luton for a new uj and to check it all over. Quick service and the right dough too.

We use these guys for our prop conversions - may be worth a shot if you get stuck with your guy?

Not sure why you was still driving it while you had the bad knocking noise you posted a week or two ago. remember the car is mostly GRP and if the prop-shaft broke free the GRP would not do anything to stop it. on the racers we run a prop guard as we have a high chance of breaking stuff, due to extreme running or crashing.

Hi leigh..well if i had known it was the prop i would not have driven it..It sounded like the clutch clonking at first,Lucky for me it didnt break when i was driving it down a motorway at 70+, It happened as i left me ole mums house and i managed to drive it real slow back home..I know they can break at the front and dig into the ground go straight through the GRP and into my soft fleshy body..How is the prop and halfshafts greased please..Dont think i have any nipples, Well i do but the car hasnt,I think..Cheers..Zig

On the spider (the X shaped bit in the middle) there will be one nipple buried in the middle. You will have to rotate the shaft to find it. I believe some of the half shafts are fitted with sealed UJs, so there will be no nipples to see. Problems can be getting your G gun on the nipple and then getting grease to come out of all four yokes (the round bits). If the grease has gone hard then normally one yoke will give way to the new grease and the others will remain stuffed with the old hard grease = strip down.

Some do, some don't - it depends on the model number of the UJ.
