Noved the TVR for the first time since the snow yesterday, and, dispite the battery being completely flat and havign to be boosted, she fired fine.
Lots of smoke though until she was warm, but idled fine.
On revving beond 3000 rpm, she hesitated a little, and on the over run, produced a rather large back fire .. This was able to be reproduced on consecutive revving.
On the road, she was lumpier than normal, and seems to be a little down on power but still pulls strong when she gets going.
She had new plugs about 4000 miles ago, and new 8mm leads back in 2003.
Im wondering if I need to change the plugs or leads or maybe this is teh sign of the coil starting to give up. all the electrical connections seem solid enough, so I donot think its down to a poor connection.

anyone ??

Sounds more like the advance retard in the dizy to me, try taking off the vac pipe from the plenum and see if the car back fires at constant revs, if no backfire say at 3000 then thats the problem area, the boben weights could have sezed inside.
Hope this helps

It knows you have been over in Dubai in the warm whilst it has had to suffer the cold over here.

Should be based there in the near future myself, so a few beers should be on the cards if you get back over.

On the problem front, mine did pretty much the same after its winter lay up, resukting in the coil giving up, changed it out and running fine now.

Sounds like a stuck oil control ring or two to me. Squeezed in to the piston lands by alloy cylinder barrels contracting more than usual in extreme cold. That would explain power loss and smoke (loss of compression). Maybe try a bit of Redex or other upper cylinder lubricant in the fuel to free up any gummy rings?

Sounds like the vacuum advance unit on the dizzy. Had the same problem on mine and was cured by changing the unit - dead easy to change but quite pricy for what it is (about £40 odd quid from Rimmers).

If you disconnect the vacuum pipe from the dizzy and it still does exactly the same I would be pretty confident you've found the culprit.

My moneys riding on something like this. Smoke has to = oil being burnt. If the advance and retard were stuck or sticking it would not really have such a drastic effect as you describe, and if is was in the wrong place at the wrong time you would either experience pinking or just a slightly loss of power across the whole band, but not the type of results you describe. Well that's only my opinion.

All sound valid solutions,
Smoke, well depends on the colour could be oil drianing into the bores after standing for a while, could be fuel related to the ignition, unburnt fuel and then that relates to the backfire.
Plugs will be pretty robust but leads could be an issue if the car is left idle in a damp environment, mine hates it and I have found that leaving the bonnet open when laid up stops condensation build up and starting issues. Coils tend to break down with heat, will run fine and then just stop, once cool they may work again, weights in dizzy, vac system and even a sticky valve could cause the issue.
Good luck

Thansk guys.
Imnot that concerned about the blue haze when starting from cold.. more so the backfire.

Ill check the plugs first, just give them a clean and reset the gaps if necessary, then look at the dizzy.
She has only done 400 miles since the heads were done, but that was back in October 2010, and we have had that very cold winter too...

Borrow a compression tester and check compression while plugs are out.

I don't want to ask the obvious, but I assume there was plenty of anti freeze added after the head work? Rough running and smoke/steam can be attributed to cracked heads etc.

Check the lead ends - I've had a few corrode away at the end recently - bloody rubbish!
