Calling Hotwire Experts !
Discussion
OK a fellow TVRCC member has a poorly V8's that was OK but cut out half way round last weeks run out, then ran for another 20 mins and then stopped and had to be trailered home. I popped round to have a nose under it's flip front and found :
1. Fuel pump is running as pressure can be felt in both flow and return lines
2. There is a spark but it does look a bit weak (maybe I'm spoilt with me coil packs
)
3. I've had a DVM on the white & black trigger wire and it is pulsing, 12v with ignition on and about 8v when cranking which seems low to me as I though the trigger input needed to see the flyback pulses from the coil primary, but it was a £5.00 DVM not a £200 fluke.
4. There is a good strong vacuum from the idle stepper inlet pipe (rules out a big air leak)
5. Stuck the DVM in injector 2 and got 0.2v when cranking, tried injector one and got 0.0 ??
6. Pulled a couple of plugs and they where both dry, which given the amount of cranking I would expect some fuel, even with the naff spark if there was some fuel it would at least try to fire but it doesn't
7. 5v supply is present at both AFM & TPS so the ECU has power
We then shoved it back in the garage and put the kettle on.
My thoughts..
Fuel pump must be OK as there is pressure in the return line (unless the reg is cattle trucked)
Engine temp sensor is not playing up as it's not over fuelling
Possible ignition amp failure ? Low voltage on injector's seems to support the theory that the ECU doesn't know the engines turning
Nipping back on Monday with the 400's redundant ignition amp, a fuel pressure gauge and a TEK scope, I also found that the injectors don't fire when you floor the throttle but I'm not sure if that is just a crude flapper thing or if the hotwire does it as well, not used to these new fangled computer things
Need to help him fix it as he is talking about getting a chimp
Oh and I know this should be in the S forum but I don't know anyone who has turned from the darkside.
Thanks !!

Maybe a thought but have a look at the fuel filter post pump, had a similar issue and experienced cut out, starting issues, fuel filter was not up to the job. I also found out that given the year of the car I cleaned out of whole fuel system/rail and was amazed at the crud in it. Final thought is that the coil could be suspect, typical symptons of breaking down at temp, cooling and working again
