I am fitting a fuel gauge in a sprint car and I'm using the offside fuel tank with the normal Tasmin sender. The gauge is a smiths unit designed to operate with a 10volt supply. I know I could fit a 12 to 10 volt voltage stabiliser which would smooth out any fluctuations in voltage. However I don't need the gauge to be super accurate I just want to avoid carrying round 4 extra gallons of fuel.

My question is if I run the gauge with a 12 volt supply (no voltage stabiliser ) will I burn the gauge out or just get fluctuating readings.

Have you ever seen a fuel gauge moving around on a wedge, you will be better of guessing how much furl you have than using a gauge.
