Having a mooch around the forum, but not quite finding what I need, so thought I’d post for opinions.

I have a V8S already, which will shortly be back on the road. However, four into two doesn’t go, so travelling anywhere with the whole family means the family estate has to travel too. That leads to squabbles about who drives the Trev, etc, etc. So, I’m thinking of flogging my daily drive to fund another one.

Now I could sell the V8S and the Scoob and buy a Cerbera, but you can’t take a can opener to a Cerb. I am also in the process of spending a not inconsiderable sum bringing the V8S mechanically up to scratch, and view her as a keeper.

Being the last of the baby boomers, I really fancy a Wedge. However, which one? The budget is quite tight now – 5k max. From the classifieds that means a pretty decent 350i should be well within reach. Given I have a 4.0l motor already, is a 390, 400 or 420SE worth that bit extra? A Series 2 350i looks like a good bet to me, but I would value some feedback on this.

Cheers,

A V8S, Cerbera and wedge sounds a good mix to mehehe

I guess the only sensible advice is to try a selection. My V8S is significantly quicker than my 350i, the wedge is a more relaxed ride but still quick enough to take some by surprise. My wedge is a little quiet, but some are simply glorious.

Good luck, whichever route you choose.

A SE has a better body IMHO then the 350i, plus the SE engines had a lot of work (most in good fettle with give 240+ BHP), more than the V8s, so a SE will be slightly quicker than a std V8S, and a 350i (most in good fettle with give 190 BHP) will be slightly slower.

The V8S is a lighter car than the Wedge, so should be slightly quicker than a 390 or 400SE.

The published performance figures demonstrate this.

Given your budget, you're likely to get better value with a 350i S2...which hopefully will produce its 'standard' 197bhp with the TVR tubular manis, and around 220lbs torque straight out of the box.

The 'massaged' bigger engines can give anything from LESS than a good 350i to getting on for 300bhp, depending on the state of the engine and what's been done to it.

That's why it's probably advisable to buy from a PHer who's car has got some history here. smile

Red is good. Selling yours?

Not sure about your description of the 350i though. "Sieve like qualities". wink

Maybe I'll wait for an SE to come up. There is one in the classifieds in Kent, but it's a long way from Cornwall to Kent, if it turns out to be a wasted journey (very pleasant coastal drive if not though!).

Only problem I have with that car is that it has clearly been modified for track day use. I have expensive experience of doing that to my Scooby and not then going near a track. I'm also a bit worried about wear on the parts, probably unnecessarily, but there you are.

Yes, I understand your concerns...thought the same thing myself when it came up for sale (IIRC) on a previous occasion.

For a 400SE in average to good nick though, that IS a good price, without the (expensive) rollbar and other work that's been done.

On a Wedge, what wear are we talking about - brake pads, discs possibly, the odd bush or two. Driveshafts should be easy enough to check for wear, engine for burning oil, clutch for slip, chassis for cracks. smile

Helluva lot more parts to wear on a Scooby I'd have thought, and a lot more weight to be thrown around.
Just my thoughts anyway.

PS...dixie's car is a beauty, just the owner who's a bit mad. rofl

As I said, red is good. I'll keep a lookout...

There is a white series 2 350i for sale just a few miles away from me on another classic car website. Needs a new hood, work on the walnut veneer, door handles, one new tyre, and the history isn't complete. He wants £5k for it though, which just doesn't seem feasible to me, particularly if you consider this one

Matt just make sure the chassis is good the rest is pretty easy to repair, Except the body dif gearbox and engine. The electrics are a nightmare and the interior needs to be good! Apart from that they are the best driving machines invented IMHO.

Only joking a good chassis is a must the rest are not too bad to repair.

I do know of this vehicle from the SELNWK club meets and Im pretty sure its only been tracked a couple of times!!

Well worth a phone call at least, Mike is easy going and easy to talk to, shame he dosent want a part ex as I am seriously considering moving on my old Jag estate, at least I would still be able to get the fishing stuff in through the back window!!
