Does anyone know the rules regarding the very old number plates??

Ive got a pal of mine who has finally decided to sell his MG B GT and although its a 76 model its got a non dating plate on it that Im considering having and putting on my TVR!

I know he should try and sell it on the MG as it is MG related but i really fancy putting a black and white plate on the Tas.

Any ideas??

To be legal the car must be registered before 1st January 1973, the colour of the plate is based on the age of the car not the age of the registration. I have a 1930's motorcycle which has a black and white number plate but if I transfered it onto my wedge it would have to have yellow or white background with black letters and numbers as the car is 1988!

Sorry, but those plates on a 1976 registered car are illegal as well.

There is an extension of the registration date if you could prove that the car was built before 1/1/1973 and registered sometime after but I don't think this applies to you.

I'm amazed there are still people in petrolhead circles who don't know this.

what more helpful could there be to add, except to let you know about the new-fangled marvels the rest of us call search engines?

There's really no need for personal insults, I made a perfectly reasonable observation on a public forum!
