Hi peeps
Just got back from the engineers and he has made me a small catch tank out of stainless instead of having the plastic monstrosity which is there at the moment..
It measures 152mm x 75mm and has a 10mm spout on the top for venting and an 8mm for the overflow pipe from the expansion tank to connect to..I have given him a design for the expansion tank but had to hold off untill the car is running properly..It cost £25 which i thought was pretty good..

Hi Mate..
I believe he can do most things as long as a template or drawing with measurements are supplied..He is going to be doing an expansion tank for me either in alloy or stainless, It's going to be wedge shaped as well..He used to work with alloy all the time but has not done so for a while..I would prefer the expansion tank to be alloy as trying to get a stainless rad neck is not easy unless taken from an old rad..
He is old school and is a nice fella who does'nt take the P with his prices...Which is nice..I'm also thinking about a washer bottle as well..

Hi Mate..
Probably a bit of both..i have given him a drawing which is basically wedge shaped and will give him the plastic one for the lug measurements..Mine is designed to accomodate 1.5ltr as the same as the original..I will find out tomorrow and let you know if he can make them in alloy..Would you still be interested if they were made of stainless even though they would be heavier..Cheers..Ziga

Personally would prefer ali with a nice bead roll or two to finish off the looks and make it less flexible.
Have you ever seen the Bailey Motorsport stuff in the flesh:

They're the nuts.
So, same shape and lug fitting for our wedge's would be nice + yes, I prefer less weight
Oh yes, normal rad cap not those stupid plastic things as in the photo above.

Hi chaps..
Had a slight modification done to the catch tank as fitting was a little bit of an issue..I didnt want to start drilling holes and making a right mess, Plus im not sure whats behind where i want to put it..So i have ordered some JB weld which is a cold weld 2 part mix which is recommended for glueing steel to glass..
Ive had some lugs welded on and a bracket made up to fit it in which i must say im well impressed with..He is attempting to make an expansion/header tank out of alloy also some washer bottles in either stainless or alloy, Im looking into obtaining some washer pumps..I will have to mirror polish them myself and give them a squirt of clear H.T lacquer..If they come out the dogs then i will be able to some take orders..Cheers..Ziga

Hi peeps
Fitted in the catch tank..Had to use expoxy resin (J.B weld) to glue it to the bulkhead after sanding off the paint..Just waiting for me rocker covers to be finished at the sand blasters as the red came out a bit naff..Debating what finish to have on them as i have a powder coating company near me..Blue steel..Copper..Red steel..gold..black..Also getting the top of the oil bung crafted in steel and then either anodised or powder coated..

Hi Rev..
I had to use a catch tank as for some reason my header tank keeps losing water out of the overflow so i put the catch tank on to collect the overflow which is then sucked back in when cooling..I think i need my rad re-cored and all the hoses changed..The plastic original is ok but im having one made out of stainless which will be wedge shape mainly because the plastic ones are getting harder to find and a wedge shaped one will look better..Should have one next week sometime..Cheers..Ziga

I had a problem similar to your's on no 1, and I got a new cap and guess what it made it worse!
The problem is the rubber on the caps is not big enough and it lets water by, down the overflow! It surprised me but when I compared caps and fitted a type with a larger rubber area, no leaking!
Simple when you know how!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Andy
O! were/whom did you get your cap from?

Thanks mate..I did forget..sorry..Ive been round the engineers this morning polishing up the tin pressed ones..Need some soap on em but they do look ok..Then i was gonna H.T clear lacquer them..If they look naff i will do as you say..Cheers..Ziga

Interesting - have you got measurements of the rubber areas, Andy? The problem is the rubber on the caps is not big enough and it lets water by, down the overflow! It surprised me but when I compared caps and fitted a type with a larger rubber area, no leaking!
It must be said that the Wedge standard expansion tank and waste onto the ground isn't the best design, the extra catch tank and suck back when cold saves loads of coolant (and antifreeze).
Things tend to get worse after head gasket problems materialise, and/or the pressure cap gets a little tired or isn't seating properly.
