Driving toward Cardiff on the A48(M) near St. Mellons where the speed limit reduces from 70-50mph I have seen a fully marked up Police BMW parked in the layby before the Premier Inn on a few occasions now and I have noticed it's got a small black box on the right side of the bootlid??? Anybody know what it could be?, some sort of speed camera or number plate recognition device for tax/insurance etc?

I have been seeing this bmw as well
3 Series right?
It's a APNR camera but I'm 99% sure it's not switched on as I've driven past 4/5 times in cars not on the MID. ( I have trade ) and never a puller

Last time he was reading a news paper

Yep, he was reading a newspaper yesterday. There was a second car parked up a few miles further down the road.

Yup ANPR, they were doing the same thing on the A4232 last week, probably quite good pickings with all the Olympic traffic coming into Cardiff.

I think it would be more terrorist intelligence gathering, rather than DVLA Tax related stuff, I've seen them lately on the 4232, coincidence always when there is an Olympic event on in the stadium.

DVLA usually have a Toyota Pious with a camera behind it to catch the tax dodgers.
