Although I have lived in Stowmarket for over 3 years I'm still unsure of where the good restaurents are!!

Enjoyed Fredericks in Ickworth house, the Leaping Hare near Ixworth and also La Talboth near Colchester, any other good places recommended? Posh or pub not bothered, just quality food (and preferable service!)

The Norton Dog has a very good reputation for nice food, its on the A1088 on the way towards Ixworth from the A14. it owned by the same people who own the Linden tree in Bury st Edmunds (near the railway station) which also has a good reputation for nice pub food.

Was due to have re-opened by now with extensive refurb but obviously is behind schedule.Should be worth the wait.

Try the food at the Last Anchor in the Ipswich Marina, food is out of this world, great setting (looking over the marina)set menu and a la carte, Top quality all round. Book a table in the conservatory. (go next door to buy a yacht)

Tuddenham Mill is STILL closed for refurb. They tried to change its use to a hotel, but planning approval was not given. So hence the delay. No idea when it will be up and running.

It doesn't really look near completion yet either although it is quite dark when I go past.

Try these:

The Beehive in Horringer, (A143 between Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill).

The Chalice, Bury St Edmunds in Cannon Street.

The Cannon Brewery in BSE (Cannon Street, adjacent to the Chalice) good food and fantastic beer.

The Grid, Abbeygate Street, Bury St Edmunds.

The Angel, Market Square, Lavenham.

A pub in the village of Felsham (The Six Bells I think) not too far from Stow, went there a year ago - v.nice, (good road for Boxster too!)

I would avoid the Norton Dog and Linden Tree if I were you - Brake Brothers stuff.

The scaffold is down off the road now so it must be getting somewhere!

The original contractors went bust also which probably didn't help.....

Slightly biased but the Crown in Bildeston serves excellent food and the Red Rose in Lindsey is also very good (although it is my local.)

Either of the two The Galleys (Ipswich and Woodbridge) are very good - Woodbridge having the edge IMO.

And if you don't mind a quick cross border raid The Thorn at Mistley (Nr Manningtree) is excellent.

Another vote for Scutchers, very nice indeed! And if you look on their wine list and pick a bottle that needs decanting and standing, they'll do that the correct time before your arrival. I can reccommend the Chateau Musar!

If you fancy a longer trip or a night in one of Cambridges pretty hotels, there is a restaurant called Midsummer house which is superb. It has been voted "Best restaurant outside London" a few times. About £60 a head without drinks, but its an epic event and full evening out rather than just a meal.

Thanks for the replies, we will certainly be trying some them over the next year.
Just to add to the list, went to the 'Firecracker grill' just off the A140 at Mendlesham, www.chillicompany.com/index.asp

Contemporary Mexican food, cost GBP60 without alchol for 2.

Nice if you fancy something a bit different (I had Swordfish in a Tequila marinade)

Keep em coming!

Try the Maison Bleue in Bury for some good French food (book early). www.maisonbleue.co.uk/
I'll also second the Grid in Abbeygate street.
