Looking to expand the rental portfolio further east. Although they're attractive, I can't help wondering if this is a direct result of this systematic vandalism of the communications into and out of Lowestoft and beyond -- A12 I'm thinking primarily although the anti-car brigade have ruined all the Suffolk roads.

So, to the future, is there much chance of sensible road policy returning to Suffolk? Because if not I seriously doubt the development of Lowestoft and Gt Yarmouth from a business investment point of view, therefore jobs and general prosperity, and that makes me nervous about investing in property there.

Do the anti-car nuts even consider this damage when they're shutting down communications?

Lowestoft is a pretty depressed area anyway, which probably explains the prices. I went there last year and the Council has had a wonderful time with their crayons, putting in one-way streets, handrails and every other kind of impedimenta you can think of. It's more like a crazy golf course than a town.

And don't expect speed limits to go up - since when did pontificating numpties ever admit they were wrong? They might lose their pensions.

Well you're probably right. But soon somebody will notice that Lowestoft is depressed for a reason -- and I'm certain some of that reason is that nobody but a fool would set up a business in an area served by the A12 etc.

Maybe the chamber of commerce might be interested? Maybe I'll write.

Would be very interesting to set up a website or something to canvass opinion on this, as the locals would quite rightly be sore if it transpired that their prospects have been reduced by imbecillic road planners.

If councils and town planners knew a rat's arse about 'business', they'd be running one, not counting paperclips. I expect they'll just keep shovelling in more benefit payouts and EU grants to keep the people struggling along unproductively.

Lowestoft has just had a major overhaul of the traffic system, basically the one way system has been done away with. It appears to have made quite an impact on my travel times to and from the town centre. However, with the holiday season approaching, that will be the true mark as to whether it has worked properly or not.

A petition is in to put a third crossing in, and this alone will pretty much solve ALL traffic related problems in the town. Fingers crossed on that one.

There are also a number of 'schemes' in place, and action areas. See

With respect to property, I've got 2 rented houses in town, and never had a problem letting either, had one tennant for years, but have had 4 in one house in the last 18months, so there's no shortage of tennants about (for the right price)

Also http://www.1steast.co.uk/ have set up consultations on improving the area, i've been fairly active in persuing some action myself, and have attended the meetings. Let's say it looks fantastic on paper, however, that's the problem, it's still on paper!

Internally I think the work in Lowestoft is a good thing, but goods and people have to travel between the town and country at large and that's where the problem is. The A12 has become a shambles and it must be having an impact on decisicions to locate up there.

Like the look of the port authority. Thanks for the info.

I have no arguement about the state of the A12, but action is being taken to increase it's capacity, and bypass the villages en-route, this is no short term thing, unfortunately we're looking at 10 years minimum before any kind of decision will be made.

I personally will be investing as much as I can afford into any housing that goes on in the Lowestoft harbour areas as and when it happens. Waterfront properties always attract the money men, and with the new marinas planned, hopefully Lowestoft will be a good stop gap for the continent.
