Hi, I'm heading up to Ely with the other half for a day (probably Sunday).

What is there to see apart from the cathedral? Also, any recommendations for lunch smile

have a walk along the river, nice cafe, a pub and boat trips
Its quite peaceful. Dont think much to the town centre itself but still a nice place to spend an afternoon.

The Cutter Inn by the river/harbour is reasonably good. The Boathouse is there also, apparently that's good food but horrendously pricey. The tearooms by the cathedral (Almonry/Almonds?) are nice if the weather is good.
If you're around in the evening, the pub opposite us, the Plough in Lt Downham is delicious (Thai food) & Scott & I will be outside enjoying the gale force winds if todays weather is anything to go by. We'll be outside the house all day Sat & Sunday fixing cars so feel free to pop past & I'll make you a sandwich if you don't find anywhere in town! smile

As for attractions, is there anything else besides the cathedral? Kings School is interesting (next to the cathedral) & on a Saturday, the farmers market is lovely - mmm. It's alternate Saturdays & I'm out of synch so I don't know if there's one tomorrow!

I'll second Naughty Magpies suggestions. The cathedral is worth a visit, particularly if you've ever seen Fred Dibnahs program about the engineering behind it.

For lunch the boathouse is superb but not cheap, the maltings just a couple of hundred meters down the river isn't bad and they do quite a nice carvery on a Sunday. For afternoon tea go to Peacocks, by the river near the maltings, if only for the experience. It's officially the best tea-room in the country accoding to the tea guild, they even have a tea menu oh and the cakes mmmmm, the cakes...

Well, thanks for the suggestions All smile

Looks like it's as walk along the river, lunch at one of the places mentioned, a look around the cathedral in the afternoon and then home.

Weather is looking ok too!

Did you by any chance drive through Arlesey on Sunday pm?

I was washing my car when an Ultima similar to the car in your profile drove past my house - fab looking machine. One fault though - you were going too slow!!!

lol, yes, that was me. We got back from Ely late afternoon, so I thought I would go for a quick spin smile
I saw someone clap as I drove through Arlesey in the Ultima, wasn't sure if they were applauding the car or the fact that I was keeping to the speed limit!! (was that you?) smile
I lived in Arlesey for 12 years, in the Old Mehodist Church opposite the Legion, so I know it well. Still have a lot of friends over there.

Had a very pleasant day in Ely, btw.
Had lunch at the Boathouse and the weather was warm enough to sit outside on the terrace overlooking the river smile
I probably had the best piece of pan fried chicken I have ever eaten thumbup

We were not able to look around inside the cathedral, though. They don't like tourists wandering around during the service!

Yip that was me! I Clapped 'cause I just love Ultima's, I am just not brave enough yet and cant afford one either - I will stick to the Griff for a while yet.

A few months ago I was having a BBQ in Toft in Cambs, an heard what I thought was a Ducati with straight through exhausts "giving it some beans". Yellow Ultima drove past instead - the sound was awesome. I could hear it all the way from Bourn, through Toft and into Comberton a mile away. Made my day!

One day when I am grown up....
