Thinking about E-class AMG 55
Discussion
Need to upgrade our estate car and have decided i need a fast petrol model something with proper power , looks like either Audi RS6 or E-class AMG 55 , Unless someone can suggest something else ??? have had Audi's before but never a merc are the stealers realy as bad as people say ?? (Darren are you there)
Nothing else comes close in terms of uber estates. The E60 M5 looks pretty good but still top dollar. You could get a 540?
Btw, I spent quite some time driving around Europe this year with a 06 RS4 Estate, top quality motor and pretty dam fast. If your budget will stretch, I dare say you couldn't go wrong with one of them.

E55's are good cars.
Are you thinking of the supercharged one (W211), or the previous (W210) naturally aspirated version?
Just for visual refence below are pics of both models (non-AMG) is you don't know the model codes)
W210

W211

The W210s suffer from rust, so a thorough check would be required or all the drainage holes, inner arches, side skirts, boot lid, sunroof and door shuts.
The M113 5.5 24 valve V8 are pretty much bullet proof whether supercharged or naturally aspirated.
5-speed gearboxes are superb, and should shift smoothly.
An essential for any Merc is a full service history. Apparently the W211 had a couple of factory recalls, so ensure any recalls have been addressed.
Best of the W210s is the post-facelift, as these are obviously newer, and are usually better spec'ed.
Most W211 E55s are well spec'ed, but even at this AMG level, full COMAND sat nav/tv was an option, as were sunroofs.
Good luck with your search, Simon
You know a Merc will make sense

Hi Simon
After having two A6 estates in a row over the last 10 years, I switched to E class estate (latest model), this year. Although, just the petrol 3L cooking model. The Audi weren't RS6s so I can't compare performance models but can comment generally on switching from Audi to Merc.
I didn't like the look of the new A6s with the goaty beard radiator grill and it felt like someone had got a bucket of 'design' and threw it at the dashboard, just for designs sake. It seemed to take away the classy, understated feel of the older one, which I preferred. I also couldn't stand the bland, dull grey plastic. So, over the years, I hung on to my old A6. I did try a Volvo V70, which I did like, but by the time I'd priced it up with the spec I wanted was the price of a Merc anyway.
Last year, when I took my A6 in for a service, I had an A6 Diesel
to try and went over to see an old boss who had just acquired an E class (diesel again), so we had some test drives. I much preferred the Merc, so this year went for it. Have to say I'm very pleased with it. Does everything I wanted, feels more refined and comfortable and the cabin is a place I like to be in. The load capacity is noticeably bigger too. I have no regrets.
AMG was out of my budget, but if my numbers came up I would no doubt go for a new 63 as the everyday run-around (but bleedin' fast), shopping trolley. As with all these things, go and try one and see if it fits the bill, your milage may vary
.
Cheers
Paul

Hi I had a w211 E55 saloon brabus tuned roughly 550bhp,very very fast drank fuel like you wouldn’t believe(when driving fast) otherwise avg about 15-16 mpg,i had a few problems the biggest being the gearbox/torque converter/radiator problem which i think only effects Feb. 2003-sept 2003 build cars, other problems i had included a valve in the supercharger(common fault),the active seats where a bit temperamental. all fixed under warranty !
Dealer here in Norwich not to bad to deal with although servicing was expensive.
Great car though !!!

I have had my 2004 E55 estate for just over six months. Before this i had a 996 carrera which i did a track day in at bedford.Just for a laugh i took the Merc on a track day at bedford. What can i say it was faster round the track than the porsche and was definatly annoying a few people, the only downside was the brakes - overheating - but trying too slow a 2 ton car down from 120 plus time and time again fair enough.I also took it on fighting torque a drag race over 3/4 mile - i beat an RS6,M5,Corvette.Gallardo off the line up too 60.I Love the car and so does the wife. This is definately a keeper, especially as i hace just aquired a westfield with a 4.3V8 in it.
Buy the Merc
