Going out to Orlando on business for a few weeks and need to hire a large 4x4 or SUV as I am taking family with me to tack a holiday on afterwards.

Anyone recommend a good company that has a site in Orlando International?

Got to be Dollar for me, have used them every time for the last 5 or 6 years, make sure that you book it over here and get the full upgrades - platinum I think it is (return fuel empty, damage waiver etc), about 35% cheaper than if you book in the US.

Ditto - never had a problem with them at Sanford or Miami International and they normally have the car I want (one exception in many years soon sorted the next day)

You'll get a nice Durango with Dollar but if its going on business expense, try Hertz as they rent Escalades, Navigators and the like.

Dollar at Orlando have been great the past two years i've used them

WOW...I wasnt expecting so many recommendations for Dollar....

I have tried to book an Escalade but apparently I need to call direct to the site.

Many thanks for the imput guys....seems Ive found the place.

At Orlando International, is Dollar on the Ground Transportation section? and if so what queues have you experienced while using them.

That looks like a Forester that's eaten too much steak!

I'll have the stonking great motorhome they had on Top Gear - it was so big it had a sports car stowed underneath biggrin

Book through http://www.usrentacar.co.uk - generally cheaper than directly with the car hire companies, although they are getting closer now.

If you're booking directly with Dollar, make sure you use the UK page - that cares of all the insurances - the US one gets very messy unless you're really confident about what you need (in terms of insurance).

Yes.

It varies a lot to be honest - they can be light on staff so a couple of awkward customers can really slow things. Register for Dollar Express and you can go to a separate line which is supposed to get priority.

NB: Don't forget to take both parts of your licence (but they rarely ask for the counterpart).

Hi Kev,

I got a house in Orlando and spend a lot of time in Florida.

I take it your flying into Orland International Airport.

My advice, providing its not a peak traveling time your heading out (and even if it is its not really a problem) dont book a car.

When yopu get to the airport head down stairs to the car rental desks (there are plenty), then head to the desk without a que, and book your car without any hassel. one Tip at the desk say you have a car reserved with one of the busy desks but if they can do you a good deal you will book with them.

There are plenty of desks and loads of cars, mini vans etc, I never have a problem, Dollar, alamo, Avis plus more all touting for business.

The thing is I've booked with Dollar and Alamo in the past and arrived to find huge ques, and taken more than an 1.5 hours to get served, not worth it when you can do it all in ten min's.

If you need any more tips on Orlando let me know, Its my second home

That's interesting - if you're there a lot, do you have separate car hire insurance? I've thought about that, but apparently it can be a lot of hassle as not all hire companies recognise it.

I usually pick a car up on arrival in the US when I'm travelling on business, and the basic car cost can be very cheap but the local daily rates for all the insurances, taxes, and other add-ons are the killer.

The car hire is so cheap it does not work out as a cost saving unless you spend about 6 months in the states. I did make some enq about buying a car for our use while we are there (cars are cheap to buy also), but we were advised we would need to get a USA driving liscence to get competertive insurance.

The driving lisence is'nt that difficult to get, but as the car hire is so reasonable it really is a no brainer.

This is the insurance I was thinking of:
http://www.insurance4carhire.com

NatWest used to sell it for about £50. Maybe they still do - they never advertised it.
