Strange feature on Google Maps

Does anyone know what has caused this effect? Is it real?

Maybe just currents stirring up plains silt off the beaches? Its a similar colour to the tone the glacial-fed lakes get from silt.

the colour is enhanced. Zoom in near to the shoreline and you will see what it really looks like.
but the swirls are there

Rain plus liquefaction, it has to go somewhere.

Or is it all those damaged pipes in the Canterbury infrastructure?

That would be the one, colour enhanced silt
