Not really a car related thread. I'm thinking of making an offer on a house there.

I dont know much about the area. I'm worried that it is possibly a bit too isolated??

Anyone care to shed any light?

All opinions welcome!

Not really isolated as you're not far from the A21 to run into Tunbridge Wells or carry on up to the M25. Good Chinese restaurant, the Honeymoon. Interesting town and sufficient shops to save you from starvation. Lots of places to go whether you go North South East or West.

We've installed kitchens in some nice properties in that area and up into Goudhurst. If you can buy a nice house at the right price go for it although it's reckoned that prices will continue to fall into 2009. Make sure it's a blinding deal.

Hi Jason how are things? I'm in Benenden, about 3-4miles south east of Cranbrook and went to school there. It's a nice small town with a couple of decent pubs and restaurants, the co-op is pretty dire and Tesco/Waitrose in Tenterden are ~10miles away. Ashford, Maidstone, Hastings, Tunbridge Wells are all about half an hour away by car which can be a bind for nights out as taxi's are north of £40. Some lovely pubs in nearby villages though.

Thanks guys. Very helpful.

Hi Hugh, I'm good thanks, hope you are too.

What is dire about the Co-op, I went in there today while I was looking around the area. Seemed quite normal to me, ok to do the weekly shop. Or did I miss something.
A supermarket I used to live near was always running out of bread and other basics. Is it something like this?

Any other useful info still welcome.

It is certainly much better than it used too be. Running out of bread (and it is just bread) is only an issue later on in the evening. Its just the quality and price which is questionable in my experience, Tesco in Tenterden is certainly a better compromise in my opinion.

We have just had an offer accepted on the said house!!

Everyone I talk to seems to be quite impressed when I say Cranbrook, so it seems to be considered a good location.

Its a bit of a project, and we will be looking to put an extension on it. So fingers crossed with planning permission and all those kind of things.

Sounds good, let us know if you are around and want to go for an early morning hoon or a beer etc.

I live in Maidstone and Cranbrook is indeed a nice hamlet.

It is a fairly quiet area although it is a bind to get to Maidstone but overall a very nice area to live.

Nice town and area. If you have children then the schools are reckoned to be excellent. Many people look for properties in the Cranbrook school area for that reason alone.

I think the Honeymoon chinese is in Tenterden although their maybe another one in Cranbrook. There is also a superb indian, Raj of Kent, between Biddenden and Tenterden. Lots of good country pubs in the area as well.

I live in Hawkhurst 4 miles from Cranbrook. As long as you avoid the Fryth estate the town is ok, couple of nice pubs/bars, Tiffins and George. Decent restaurants in the surrounding area, like Tenterden, the Turkish there is very good.
Also some nice roads about, down to Rye via Newenden and the road from Sandhurst to Tenterden is.

Spot on, and if you go from Hartley to Benenden, then Rolvenden, turn right to Newenden, then left down to Rye you get all of that lot!

Also second the Turkish in Tenterden being worth a visit.

@ Hugh. I've never thought about that route but it's actually quite obvious! Doh!

I lived in Benenden just outside cranbrook for 22yrs & went to school in Cranbrook, my parents have a shop in Cranbrook, parents & sister/brother in law all live in Benenden nr Cranbrook. Its a nice area but you have to drive miles for choice when shopping.

I'm over that way every other Sunday for lunch at the folks !
