Satnav on my e39 BMW seems to have packed up.

Anybody know of anyone in Kent / Essex / Sussex that's good at this sort of thing?

Cheers,
Matt

Well, it was all working fine yesterday. I was driving along and it 'flickered' off a couple of times before coming back on again.

But today it now remains off, a black screen. It did come on half way through my journey for a few seconds before the screen went blank again. When it came on though, all he trip info was present and correct, leading me to believe the issue is with the screen itself.

The car is a 2002 e39 530 auto and the sat nav screen is the widescreen one with TV, computer etc etc.

Any ideas? New unit? Loose connection?

Any other thoughts most welcome before I take it to a specialist and get forced to accept whatever number is written on the invoice!

It sounds like you have a loose connection or you have a loose fuse somewhere. I suggest you go through your fusebox/es and check every fuse and then if you can check the wiring out .

I'd be guessing at the backlight. Sadly it's probably impossible to get a replacement, but as it goes on and off I'd be tempted to get some generic electronic repair place to look for dry joints on the board. As you've guessed the replacement costs for the whole unit are probably only allowed to be quoted if you're sitting down and your bank manager is on the other line.
