My wife managed to spilt an entire cup of tea over the laptop keyboard. If you have ever wondered what would happen, no lights at all are coming on so it does appear to effectively kill laptops (dried it over night, still no luck). If anyone is local and has a copy of XP or Windows 7 that they would like to sell me, please let me know. I need to get my old desktop built before I go away on business later this week and leave my wife without connectivity to the world.

sorry Steve, in France this week so can't help, back on friday night though so I might be able to something at the weekend if you're still struggling ..

there should be a website to facilitate this sort of thing ...

If you have the facilities at work or elsewhere you should be able to download XP or Win 7 for free. The software itself doesn't actually cost anything, it's the licence you pay for.
If your pc had XP or Win 7 on it before then you should already have a licence key (possibly on a sticker on the case) in which case you will have nothing to pay at all!

Thanks both. Good point Lazza, the back of the dead laptop show the product key so if I can find a site that will allow me to download the software that's allowed through work's corporate network I'll have the software again. I then just need to get it onto a boot disk..I maybe be over at the weekend then John if I don't get it sorted today, cheers again. Btw my wife has suggested that this was karma and that I should get her an iPad so worst case for me, best case for her we'll have one of those before the end of the week. Funny how Apple gets you in the end!

Which version of XP or Win 7 do you need (i.e. have the licence key for)? I have discs for both but only the Professional edition.

Thanks for that. I can't remember what version it was even though it only died a couple of days ago. I don't remember seeing the word 'pro' but it could have been. There's no indication on the product key what version it refers to so I'm Googling to see if there's a way to find out from the key.

Problem solved, a friend and stay at home dad and techie is going to build the desktop that's gathering dust in the office and use my spare XP license. The OH is getting an iPad 2, happy days and thanks.
