Driving to Austria

Hi Guys

Looking at driving to Bad Ischl in Austria for some snowboarding in February and a few of you guys have done a fair bit travel in Europe!

Anyone able to recommend a good cheap crossing ferry or train?
Any recommendations for places to visit/stay on the way?

Depends how much you want to break the journey up, that could probably be done in one (very long) day.

If you want stops on the way get to somewhere like Reims (and forget Belgium) and cross into Germany from the road that goes from Reims. Or if you don't fancy that Spa / Nurburg are an easy first day.

From Reims / Spa you could easily get to Munich in a day then you could actually enjoy the final part of the drive into Austria whilst enjoying Munich for some beer.

All depends on if there is anything you want to do / see as you could just as easily go down through France then across Switzerland which will be an awesome journey however will take longer.

I do this type of trip 3-4 times a year from Oxford. Have PM'd you with a more enjoyable route taking Eurotunnel to Reims, Haute Savoie, Geneve, Lac Leman to Montreux, onto Lac Constance, Innsbruck, Salzberg, and then Bad Ischl. Time non-stop 21hrs10mins. Go for two overnights if possible and enjoy the scenary 1.Reims, 2.Geneve or Annecy? It's then only 8hrs to Bad Ischl. Drive round the lakes is really great, some good semi-mountain routes, and Lac Constance is a good place to take a long well-earned lunch. You could then try a quicker route on the way home. Have fun.

I have driven to Switzerland, Austria and Italy a few times. I always stay here:

About 6 hours away from the Eurotunnel - might not quite be on a direct route to Austria though...

Breakfast on the tunnel
Lunch at Reims (pic nic)
Schnitzer and Alt Bier in Munich

Day 2
Breakfast in Munich
Lunch in Bad Ischl
Snow boarding folowed by Ice wine?

I reccon from yesterdays trip and others this would be ok, cruise at 150kmh?

ETA, unless Europe is snowy I would be tempted to do the 11 hour drive with an hour for lunch.... and stop for dinner if the traffic gets bad.

Done this drive a few times, but to Kitzbuhel area, and we normally drive straight through to get there quick as poss..

Jan 2011 & March we did Eurotunnel, much quicker than any ferry, then into Belgium thru Gent, Brussels and over the border in Germany at Aachen, across and south past Bonn, down to Stuttgart, across to Munich over into Austria and to Salzburg...

We normally do the drive through the night and it takes about 13 hours once off the ferry..
