Where to live? Commuting to Slough

Hi all,

I'm after some good advice.

I've just been offered a really good job in Slough (SL1).

However, being a midlands boy I really know very little about the area. I'm looking to move somewhere around slough or one of the surrounding areas within a reasonable commutable distance.

I'm 23 and I don't want to be bored. I'd like a nice area with good amenities including a good gym. I'm looking for a small 1 bedroom flat or share up to around 600pcm.

Does anyone have any recommendations of where to move? I like the look of windsor but its quite expensive and i've heard the commute might be a pain.

Windsor might be expensive but has the best choice of 'evening activities' locally. Plenty of late bars, good eateries and less than an hour from central London.

Cippenham is ok (I live there) is cheaper than Windsor and Slough but within easy travelling distance to Windsor, Slough and Maidenhead.

My Postcode is SL1 9, it is a built up area but people seem to keep themselves to themselves. If you need advice on road names/ Area's etc let me know

People have a real downer on Slough but having lived there nearly all my life it's not as bad as people make out. Yes there are a few rough areas but every town has those, a lot of people that have an opinion have only passed through it or worked there not actually lived there.

Marlow is nice and has a good few pubs etc, good gyms at bisham abbey and the marlow club. Cookham is up the hill and is quieter than marlow but has some great pubs and restaurants. Both within 15mins from slough

I'd be looking in the Reading area (Half hour down a clear A4 and you're in Slough) great night life, good gyms etc.

If no then as Nigel says, take a look in the Windsor area.

Commuting to Slough from Reading will not equal an empty A4!

Why not get a flat in Slough itself. It's not a bad place. You can live just outside in Burnham, Farnham Royal or similar. Since you're renting you can then look around and move to where you prefer after a few months.

7.30 I did the route from Just outside Reading to Slough Industrial Estate in halfhour 5 days in a row.

Not that much different an hour or so later, Reading to Slough on A4 has good flow the main hold up will be when he hits Slough, but hey depends how long OP wants to commute for the the right place.

Wow. I'm surprised, esp with Maidenhead in the middle of that route. The M4 is usually a carpark too.

So the A4 is clear at 0830 on a weekday? I think not, you must be thinking of a different road. I used to commute from Slough to Maidenhead every day and at 0800 I can tell you the traffic is nearly solid.

Agreed, I've been commuting from Pangbourne to Slough for 3 years, its a crap commute and seriously eroding my quality of life.

Live in Windsor, its nice, good social life, plenty of cafes, good food, and the commute to Slough is about 1 mile up the relief road. It can get a bit clogged, but its not too bad.

Farnham Common, Marlow, Beaconsfield, High Wycombe. 600pcm around here wont get you much though.

A lot of the areas being suggested are more expensive than Slough but even for £600 pcm you probably wouldn't get a studio flat in Slough.

I'm renting a 1 Bed Maisonette for £625 and luckily the landlord has agreed not to up the rent for a couple of years but similar places are itro £700 now ( I moved in about 15 months ago)

Theres a 1 bed flat next to mine in Farnham Common up for £650

If you don't use the A4 it's possible. Go through Paley Street and then up into Slough it'll be 40 minutes tops everyday (From Twyford not Reading)

Steer clear of Middle Green,too many nutters sand blasting Land Rover chassis in their back gardens......,on the upside though there is a new Pole Dancing club opening up at George Green just up the road!

I live in central Windsor, and as others have said it's a great place to live, and for younger folk there's lots of good bars and nightlife.

But for your budget you are probably looking at a house share - which can be fun, too - if there are a lot of younger people at your new employer it may be worth getting in touch with them to see if many of their staff share and if there is a newsletter or noticeboard where you can ask/check for a room.

Reading is good, too - I had a flat there a few years ago very close to the centre - a good train service into Slough.

For both Reading and Windsor I would aim to live as central as possible, you can walk and train to slough in minutes.

Maidenhead is OK, I had an office there for a few years, didn't really get to know it at night, though.
