Looking for a mechanic in (or willing to travel to) Epsom
Discussion
Hi all,
I got back from holidays last night with my Shogun on the back of a recovery lorry.
It decided to die on a dual-carriageway in France 10 days ago.
Before I left, I had the timing belt and water pump changed. I therefore obviously asked the garage in France to look at this as a possible cause of the failure, as it did seem to be that sort of thing.
As they were being paid for by the breakdown people, their engagement obviously stopped at the point of deciding the engine was beyond economic repair at that point, but they did say that they would've expected to see more disturbance to the build up of mud & grime on the engine in the process of changing the timing belt, so there is actually a question as to whether the belt has even been changed!
The truck is currently on the road outside my house in West Ewell, obviously can't drive itself, and is a bloody nightmare to tow even for short distances, hence my desire to find someone who could initially at least come and have a look in situ.
Realistically, I think it's going to be a scrapping job, as the truck is probably only worth around £1,500 at best, but if the timing belt job either hasn't been done or has been botched, then obviously that's £400+ I'd like back from the original mechanic!

I got the cam cover off, and the belt is new and where it's meant to be, so no complaints against the previous mechanic - just bloody unlucky timing for me to have a major failure elsewhere just after changing it.
There also seems to be no oil in the thing. There was when I left, so God only knows what happened!
Either way, it's not worth spending much to find out, so it looks like I'll just be scrapping it.
