That would be classed as Lower Earley which is a reasonable area it's a large estate of private houses.
If schools are important you need to look into whether it is in the Maiden Erleigh catchment area (only decent senior school this side of Reading). Reason we are moving is because schools really are bad there unless you can do private.

IMHO - Its not the nicest of areas really.. Wide roads, not a great deal of Parking, Football Stadium traffic when Reading are at home, Lots of Very Multi-cultured families, Lidl on your doorstep..! (Plenty of takeaways and places to get Halal meat etc)
Will have loads of roadworks in the area in the coming months with the new Motorway junction is being built.
Avoid

Whitley?
Still no idea what it's called, despite much peering at maps.
It's just off the bottom end of Whitley Wood Lane, if that helps? As said by John, roadworks are ongoing for 2 years on the M4 junction.
Personally I would avoid.
That's not good.
I asked the estate agent about the area, he said it was "mostly" private housing round there. Though he did mention the roadworks, so fair play for that. Although he played them down and said they'd be finished by the autumn, but of course I didn't believe that one.
Thanks for your input, everyone!

Shame. Nice house in a less than desirable location.
The school thing is possibly a deal-breaker, one of the reasons for moving is that SBaby is due to move up to junior school in 2010 and neither of the schools that we're in the catchment area for is anything to write home about.
Still going to look at this Reading place though. Just in case.

SGirl. I wouldn't move to South Reading if you don't have to.
To the South OF Reading it's a different matter. Lots of lovely places around there: Shinfield etc.
Even further South are "the villages" North of Basingstoke: Bramley and so on.
It's a trade off between commute length, housing cost and quality of surroundings.
If you end up looking nearer my "manor" PM me and I'll give you an honest opinion of areas you're thinking of looking at.

Thanks Don, that would be good. We have to stay within commutable distance of Chiswick (straight down the M4), but otherwise we can be pretty flexible on location. A village would be infinitely preferable to Reading itself! We'd prefer to be somewhere quieter (don't mind a drive into school in the mornings if that's what's required...) rather than in the middle of somewhere busy. I work from home so I don't care where we live, as long as the neighbours don't spend all day in the garden with their equally idle mates, shouting and swearing and disturbing me while I try to earn a living!!
I'll have a good look round later on and PM you, if I may?

Exactly why I am moving out of the area, the schools are terrible in that catchment area - I speak from experience. My boys are 8 and 5.

By the way, who is the selling agent?

As has already been said "South Reading" means "Whitley". You know what estate agents are like...
If you look around junction 10 you have more options for housing and schools.
Lower Earley (where i live), Earley, Winnersh, Woodley, Barkham, Sindlesham, Wokingham, Arborfield, etc.
If you find something that looks good feel free to PM me and i'll give you the skinny on that particular area, i don't know as much about the local schools as some because i'm not a parent but i have lived around the area for 20 years and went to school here myself!

I have lived in Earley (right next to Maiden Erlegh School) all my life (only 23 so not sure what that counts for)and I try and avoid South Reading if possible. Reading seems to get a lot of stick but I haven't got a problem with it apart from the fact that there seems to be less and less to do in town?!
The old man commutes to Heathrow every day and has done for the last 20 something years and he hasn't been put off - unless he just got tired of moaning about it.
Don't know if this has been of any help what so ever!
