Morning All,

The radio unit in my ZT is being a complete arse. It will work for a while, then cuts out. Can anyone recommend somewhere I can get it repaired, ideally without paying a fortune?

Normally, I'd just junk it and get a new head unit, but in this case, it's all tied in with the sat nav and the TV, so unless I replace everything, starting with a double din fascia which on its own is around £100, I'm stuffed.

Looking on some of the BMW forums (it's a BMW BM24 radio module), I think the problem is probably going to be one or more cracked solder joints inside the radio, but it's not something I would know where to start with.

Chris

I know yours is not a TVR, but Carl Baker has a top reputation for dealing with Alarms/Stereo Installations and is an all-round good egg. He may be able to help, so probably worth a chat?

His website is www.tvruk.tv

I can, but they're going for around £180+, and there's no knowing whether they won't have exactly the same problem a few weeks down the line. I think it should just be a case of resoldering all the joints in there, so fairly generic, but any time I've tried using a soldering iron, it always comes out looking like robot bukkake porn. frown

rofl That's quite specialist porn, isn't it.

Good luck. Personally, I'd just bite the bullet and replace it with something new. As you say, it could happen again.

If it makes you feel any better, I got a quote from Mercedes when my COMAND autochanger failed to work. Their advice was replace the entire system. Cost: £3000.

Can you remove the unit yourself?

I wonder if a TV/Video repair person could take a look at it, but they wouldn't want to remove it from your car.

Yes. It's the easiest radio on the face of the planet to remove. It just lives under the boot floor with a single connector and aerial in a vertical holder, so it literally just slides out.
