Anyone know what Tilehurst is like to live in?

I currently live in Didcot but want to move towards Reading but am having an issue with central reading as it's difficult to get a place with off road parking. My Wife drives to Oxford 3 days a week so it would be good to be able to get out of Reading easily too so I came up with Tilehurst.

Anyone know what it's like generally?

Live on the edge of Tlehurst and have done on and off for 20+ years.

Like all neighbourhoods it has it's better and not so good areas, but mostly it's ok... and to be blunt it's down to budget as to which sort of area you'll end up in. Also worth considering Pangbourne (South side of the A329 - North side is mostly current or ex-council housing...) and Purley-on-Thames.

Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions or don't want to put your budget publicly on the internet! I can then let you know the sort of areas to look at around here within budget. smile

I live in west Reading on the edge of Tilehurst (Oxford Rd area, purpose built flat with off road car park). Not a bad place to live but theres certainly areas ofTilehurst I would want to steer well clear of, Dee Road estate being one of them. Incidently I had a flyer through the door yesterday from the council inviting me to a presentation on a new housing development in Tilehurst called Dee Park - was very thin on details so I'm still none the wiser tbh!

As above - generally a good area, but there are parts to avoid like the plague. Consult before buying!

Thanks folks and for the PMs. En route to Tilehurst now so will see what's what. We're looking at the Purley end of town.

Anything's got to be better than Didcot... smile

I'm glad sebo started this thread, we were just having thoughts about Tilehurst too!

We really like the area south-east of Reading, but so far just anywhere we've found with nice houses is earmarked for development. (Incidentally, does anyone know what progress there is with the Hatch Dairies site in Winnersh?)

We're looking tentatively at the west side of Tilehurst (scarily next to fields just begging to have a million Wimpey homes plastered on them irked ) and possibly Calcot. Any views on these?

Hey sebo, see you out and about over there. We should do half the properties for sale each and save each other some time. wink

As with any area, it comes down to budget and what you want for your money. There are good schools and not so good but none that are really bad. I'd go for Tilehurst over Calcot unless you are looking at two very specific areas (golf course or Mill Lane) but Calcot will be cheaper as a rule. Always happy to help with specifics in needed.

I'd go for one of the more rural parts of Tilehurst over Calcot as such. The golf course and Mill Lane areas are much better than the rest (read as north of the A4) of Calcot though, my parents have lived off Mill Lane for around 20 years now.

I'm currently just south of Theale in the middle of no-where and it's great. 5 mins to Theale station, 10 mins to the M4 etc. The schools in Theale always used to be good too.

As per other posters, happy to offer opinions where wanted, I've lived in the area most of my life so know it pretty well. PM if desired.

We've seen some absolute shockers in our search. I'd love to know what camera and lense they use to photograph the rooms as I'd use it on my holiday snaps..

I've met some decent and awful agents too. One agent hadn't seen the house before he showed us round (he was covering for a colleque who had gone home sick) and the three of us ended up in fits of laughter at how shocking the decor and cleanliness of the house was.

wavey

I'm getting quite good at interpreting the pictures before we book to view now. A pic of just the front means "horrible mess", a pic of just the front and then a not very nice back "garden" (read: all laid to patio) means "lazy buggers, probably filthy". 13 pics on an ad means "we're charging extra for the wallpaper". biggrin One cunning one was of a link detached house, looks fine until you realise what's just to the left of the pic - another house, with a driveway blocking access to the driveway of the house we went to view!

Went to one house the other day that the couple are selling because they're divorcing. The agent has pointed this out to me several times, for some reason. The house is nice enough, a bit tatty and unloved. But loads of photos of a small boy and some smiley wedding photos on the walls. Sad. frown

I wish the agents would just be honest, though. We've spent so much time looking at houses in nice areas, asking the agents whether there are any planning permissions we need to be aware of, get told there aren't any, see house, like it, delve into the details in the local area (we don't do this for every house because it takes ages) and find they're slapping 300 houses on the front doorstep. They could save us all time if they'd only be upfront and say there's a development due to go in. We'll still buy a house, just not the one we were looking at!

Heyho. We're doing Woodley this week and we'll be taking a look round Tilehurst in a couple of weeks' time unless the perfect house turns up this week. Might see you about the place. Let us know how you get on! beer

I live in Tilehurst, have done for the past 17 years.

Like what has already been said, there are good areas and not so good areas.

Areas to avoid for me are the Potteries estate, which is a shame as when I moved here it was a nice estate to live in but has seemingly gone down hill rapidly in the past 10 years.

Dee Road which has already been mentioned but TBH Dee Road has improved but I would still steer clear.

Corwen Road, Teviot Road & Usk Road aren't great either.

Nicer areas tend to be around the Little Heath area, Birchwood's are nice as is the SNW estate. Westwood Glen, Overdown Road and the roads off Overdown Road are nice and quiet.

I live behind the Water Tower but lived in the Little Heath area for 10 years.

I lived in outlet for a year, was quite a nice little village. You could always ask to speak to the local Bobby about the areas

Boundary Close, otherside of the water tower.

Please stalk me, I would thoroughly enjoy it.

You're OK. I'm too lazy to walk up the hill. Always thought it would be a cool road to live on. Houses look a bit identi-kit though.

A couple of you have mentioned the golf course - what about it? It is good, or bad? And the Little Heath/west bit, south part of the village. I don't know where any of these roads you're mentioning are. Yet. smile

LittleHeath is a nice area with lots of countryside and forestry commission land literally on the doorstep. Also Little Heath is an excellent secondary school - but you are also commutable to Theale Green School which is also superb.

Thanks John, that sounds good! It looks as though the area is reasonably free of major developments, too - must be because Wokingham borough is going to be taking on most of the burden of new builds for the around-Reading area.

Hey Sebo, found anything yet? wavey

Got a second viewing on one this Saturday (need to measure some of the rooms as not sure if they are a bit on the small side) and seeing 4 other ones.

Agent has convinced me to see a couple in Reading West. I'm not convinced though.

I need to see how much places are in Earley / Lower Earley as I've got a couple of pals that live there and I like the area. No idea if they are building there though (probably based on what you've said about future developments in and around Reading).

Good luck with your search
