I have just been "told" this morniing that i am to deliver a short speech at a wedding next weekend, and the groom is totally deaf. As most of what i have to say is to be directed to him, i would quite like to make at least some effort to "sign" as well as speak.

I haven't been given the full brief yet, but is there anybody out that that can help.... please??

When do you need to do this? Sallys good friend does this for a job, but she is in Chelmsford! Could well be able to do something though.

ETA Doh! just read your post again, next weekend yikes Might involve a mid week drive to Chelmsford!

Thanks Roy, might it be something she could help me with over the phone? (although i recognise this might be a little tricky when we are talking about hand movements )

According to youtube they have over 68,000 videos on 'sign language lessons'...

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sign+l...

And if you refine the search there are even individual words, letters, numbers, phrases, etc.

Using a similar search technique, i now know how to tell the waiter that "my hovercraft is full of eels".
I just need to find an opportunity to use it biggrin

Will there be other deaf people there? If so, it might be appreciated if there was somebody to translate for all the speeches. Perhaps somebody has already thought of this, but if not you might find the groom has a friend who would be willing to stand up and translate.

My daughter works for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People in Saunderton (near High Wycombe)and she says that the level of ability you need for 'simultaneous interpreting' is very high and nobody with a lower standard of BSL would be able to do it. You can hire British Sign Language interpreters (yell.com) - they do when they need a standard above their in-house signers. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People

Thanks GreenV8S and motco

It does occur to me that there will be an interpreter there, but i wanted to make that extra effort as a mark of respect.
A bit like ordering my beer in the language of the country i happen to be drinking in wink

I have no expectation of being able to do the whole speech in sign, but the bride is my stepmother, and i have to do the "Father of the Bride" speech in the absence of the real one (the bride is 78!).
I thought it would be a nice gesture to welcome the groom into our family in sign, so am only looking to sign a couple of sentences, whilst simultaneously speaking them.

I passed my stage 1 and stage 2 BSL, but that was about 7 years ago now and, like any other language, if you don't use it you forget it, so I'm a bit rusty.

I can remember some and I do have some great books that might be of some help if you're interested.
